Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Research Technologist 2 to join our team at Northwestern University. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting experimental research lab work and assisting in the design of one or more specific phases of entire projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts experimental research lab work and assists in the design of one or more specific phases of entire projects.
  • Completes mathematical calculations, computer tasks, and assists in judging the validity of data.
  • Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, and Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Designs, sets up, and conducts basic experiments.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity, and accuracy.
  • Completes the following activities:
    • Molecular Biology:
      • DNA
      • Western blotting
      • PCR, RT-PCR
    • Histology:
      • Tissue fixation/processing: embedding, preparation of blocks and sectioning, staining
      • Immunohistochemistry
      • Microscopy
    • Animal:
      • Husbandry
      • Breeding
      • Dissections
      • Blood collection
      • Surgical procedures
      • Database management of colony
    • Administration:
      • Maintains detailed records of results, including collecting, extracting, and entering data.
      • Manipulates, interprets, and/or presents results.
      • Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.
      • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
      • Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts, and publications.
    • Finance:
      • Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses.
      • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
      • Orders and/or maintains inventory of reagents, mice, and/or lab supplies.
    • Supervises:
      • Trains students.
    Requirements:
    • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related field.
    • Appropriate combination of education and experience.
    Competencies:
    • Demonstrated laboratory experience.
    • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols.
    • Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations.
    • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
    • Manual dexterity.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Knowledge of mass spectrometry equipment, particularly LCMS and FT-ICR.
    • Knowledge of MALDI-Imaging Mass Spectrometry.
