Job Summary

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Property and Drug Clerk to join our team at the City of Roanoke's Police Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all pieces of property and drug evidence are properly secured, documented, stored, analyzed, retrieved, and disposed of according to strict chain-of-custody procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and process evidence, including cash, valuables, and drugs, into the evidence room
  • Follow safety procedures when handling drug or unknown substance items
  • Verify the contents of evidence bags using a drug reference book
  • Check evidence packages for identification marks or serial numbers
  • Enter relevant data into the computer and print adhesive labels
  • Assign storage locations for evidence packages
  • Create and file evidence hard cards
  • Mark evidence packages with storage locations using permanent markers
  • Complete lab analysis request forms and attach them to evidence packages
  • Retrieve valuables, cash, and sealed bags from a locked box using a secured key
  • Transport evidence packages to the state drug lab for testing
  • Retrieve evidence packages from the state drug lab
  • Return evidence packages to the evidence room for storage
  • Organize and arrange property room storage facilities
  • Move heavy items in the property room
  • Categorize property as found, inventoried, or evidentiary
  • Initiate and supervise evidence package destruction procedures
  • Enter all evidence package movements into the computer for tracking
  • Release property to submitting officers for court appearances
  • File and maintain court confiscation orders
  • Initiate property release form letters to submitting officers and owners, if known
  • Testify in court as required
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school with a major in criminal justice science desirable but not required
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, prepare reports, and communicate effectively with customers and employees
  • Fluency in Spanish beneficial
  • Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
Work Environment
