Property and Evidence Custodian

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Property and Drug Clerk to join our team at the City of Roanoke's Police Department. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all pieces of property and drug evidence are properly secured, documented, stored, analyzed, retrieved, and disposed of according to strict chain-of-custody procedures.

• Maintain control of evidence and recovered property, ensuring all pieces are properly secured, documented, stored, analyzed, retrieved, and disposed of according to proper procedures.
• Assist citizens, including those experiencing personal crisis, throughout the process of potentially recovering confiscated or stolen property.
• Receive evidence (cash, valuables, drugs) directly into the evidence room, following safety procedures in handling drug or unknown substance items.
• Verify contents of bag visually according to drug reference book, check heat seal and re-weigh evidence package as necessary, and check items for identification marks or serial numbers.
• Enter pertinent data into computer and print adhesive labels, assign storage location for evidence packages, and create and file evidence hard cards.
• Mark all evidence packages with storage location using permanent markers, complete lab analysis request form and attach to evidence package, and retrieve valuables, cash, and sealed bags from locked box using secured key.
• Transport evidence packages to state drug lab for testing, retrieve evidence packages from state drug lab for testing, and return the evidence package to the evidence room for storage.
• Organize and arrange property room storage facilities, move items in property room which may be heavy, categorize all property as found, inventoried, or evidentiary, and initiate and supervise evidence package destruction procedures.
• Enter all movement of evidence packages into computer for tracking, release property to submitting Officer for court appearances, file and maintain all court confiscation orders, and initiate property release form letters to submitting officers and owners, if known.
• Testify in court as required, assist with normal Property Room operations as needed, and assist officers, attorneys, and citizens who have property-related questions.

• Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in criminal justice science desirable but not required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to prepare reports and correspondence, communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees of organization, and fluency in Spanish is beneficial.
• Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
