Optometric Assistant

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Optometric Assistant to join our team at Kaiser Permanente. As an Optometric Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting doctors of optometry in providing patients with the best possible care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accurately record patients' medical and visual history, review and prepare clinical information for doctors.
- Take and record patient vitals when indicated in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Perform pre-testing, such as assessing gross visual skills, extraocular muscle action, and pupillary reflexes.
- Operate OCT, Visual Fields, and Diabetic Photos equipment.
- Maintain accurate records and reports as instructed by the doctor.
- Instill eye-drops when ordered by the doctor.
- Assist in therapeutic procedures such as foreign body removal.
- Manage patient communication, including phone calls and other patient interactions.
- Coordinate patient optometric care with optical dispensing, membership services, and other departments.
Requirements:
- Minimum two years of experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
- Successful completion of a JCAHPO accredited ophthalmic medical technology program or one year of experience in a back office provider support role in healthcare with on-the-job training in Kaiser Permanente's Optometry training program.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Paraoptometric Assistant Certificate within 24 months of hire from the American Optometric Association or Ophthalmic Technician Certificate within 24 months of hire from The Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Three years of experience in optometric or ophthalmic practice.
- Basic knowledge of Kaiser Permanente policies, procedures, and philosophy.
- Thorough knowledge of basic science and optics, familiarity with optometric and/or ophthalmic procedures related to preliminary testing.
