Overview:

The Principal Civil Engineer will be responsible for overseeing the design, maintenance, and construction of sewage treatment facilities, flood control systems, and sewage collection infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads the development of designs, layouts, and specifications for water reclamation and associated facilities.
  • Plans and manages the construction processes for treatment plants, flood control measures, and pumping stations.
  • Directs the Field Services Section in conducting engineering surveys and managing right-of-way acquisitions.
  • Oversees the review and processing of permit applications, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Conducts engineering studies, testing, and evaluations, while keeping updated on emerging technologies.
  • Prepares financial plans, tracks spending, and ensures effective budget management.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to provide expert technical guidance and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Manages staff, ensuring adherence to organizational policies and addressing personnel issues.

Working Conditions:

This position may involve exposure to mechanical equipment, varying noise levels, odors, and diverse weather conditions. The role may also require close interaction with construction activities and heavy machinery.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth understanding of civil engineering standards for sewage treatment facilities and flood control systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering design principles and surveying methodologies.
  • Significant expertise in wastewater engineering practices.
  • Capability to supervise administrative tasks and interpret engineering design standards.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in developing detailed reports and engineering designs.

Mandatory Qualifications:

Must hold a Professional Engineer registration in the State of Illinois.

Educational Requirements:

A degree from an accredited institution in chemical, civil, environmental, sanitary, or structural engineering, along with relevant professional experience.

Alternative Qualifications:

Full-time graduate studies in engineering may be considered in lieu of non-supervisory experience.

Promotional Criteria:

  • Minimum of one year of service in designated roles within the organization.
  • Civil service status in applicable classifications.
