Castle Rock, Colorado, United States Colorado Judicial Branch Full time

MISSION STATEMENT

The Colorado Judicial Branch is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to justice, enhancing public safety, and upholding the rule of law throughout the state. Our courts and probation departments strive for impartial and prompt resolution of disputes, support for families, litigants, and victims, rehabilitation of clients, and active community involvement.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

General Overview:
This role involves providing advanced legal services by conducting comprehensive legal research for judges within a judicial district.

Key Distinctions:
This position is differentiated from law clerks and similar roles due to its exclusive focus on legal research for all district judges and the upkeep of the district's law library. Responsibilities do not include courtroom or bailiff duties. The position reports directly to the Chief Judge of the assigned district. Each district is permitted to convert Law Clerk roles to Legal Research Attorney positions at a ratio of 0.25 Legal Research Attorneys for every 1.0 District Court Judge, or to reallocate funding from Law Clerks to Legal Research Attorneys at a 4:1 ratio. Each district must maintain at least one Legal Research Attorney. This is a classified, non-certified position that is considered at-will and may be terminated at any time without cause.

Application Requirements:
Candidates are required to submit a concise writing sample (maximum of 5 pages) that has not been edited by another individual, along with a cover letter and resume.

The Legal Research Attorney Team supports District Court Judges in legal research and writing across multiple counties. Applicants should be adept at working independently on intricate legal writing assignments. Minimum qualifications include: Graduation from an accredited law school, possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado, and eligibility to practice law in Colorado.

Salary: Compensation for this position will be determined based on relevant experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts thorough research on legal issues presented during litigation.
  • Advises judges on research findings and assists in formulating appropriate legal strategies.
  • Drafts initial opinions issued by the court.
  • Reviews court documents and pleadings as assigned by judges.
  • Compiles information from research relevant to specific cases.
  • Maintains library resources, including books, CD-ROMs, and electronic research subscriptions across multiple locations.
  • Recommends library materials for research and reference.
  • Manages access to research materials and the district's law library for individuals other than district judges.
  • Participates in meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not entail formal supervisory responsibilities. The role requires accountability for one's own work and collaboration within a unit performing similar functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Graduation from an accredited law school; possession of a certificate of admission to the Bar of the State of Colorado; and eligibility to practice law before Colorado courts.

Physical Demands:
The employee is regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, and communicate verbally. Occasional walking, repetitive motions, and lifting up to 10 pounds may be necessary. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:
The role may involve handling emergency situations and is frequently subject to interruptions and multiple inquiries. The typical noise level in the work environment is quiet.
