Position Overview

The Hospice Care Aide for the Inpatient Unit is responsible for ensuring that the facility is kept in a clean and hygienic state at all times, thus supporting the health and comfort of patients in a nurturing environment. This role also involves coordinating with department heads to ensure that effective housekeeping services are executed across all areas of the center. Additionally, the aide may serve in the capacity of Hospice Aide-House Mother as required. Compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as guidelines from other certifying bodies, is essential. The Hospice Care Aide is expected to embody the core values of Compassion, Integrity, and Excellence, while promoting the Compassus philosophy, grounded in the 6 Pillars of Success. Upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and fostering positive relationships within the organization and with external partners is a key responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Responds promptly to patient calls.
  • Adheres to specific cleaning and service protocols as directed by the Hospice Director of Clinical Services.
  • Monitors inventory and informs supervisors of supply requirements.
  • Ensures assigned patients receive the necessary attention to maintain a sanitary and pleasant environment.
  • Provides support to families and assists with post-mortem care as needed.
  • Handles laundry duties for linens and clothing.
  • Sorts, counts, folds, and manages linens appropriately.
  • Restocks essential supplies such as drinking glasses and writing materials.
  • Refills bathroom supplies as necessary.
  • Completes all scheduled tasks efficiently.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One to three months of relevant experience or training is highly preferred.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is highly preferred.
  • In states where licensure is not mandatory, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
    • Possess a current license/certification as an aide; or
    • Have completed a state-approved nurse aide training program and maintained continuous employment in that role for the last 24 months.
  • Current CPR certification is required.
Skills and Abilities

  • Mathematical Skills: Proficient in basic arithmetic operations and the ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
  • Language Skills: Capable of reading and interpreting various professional documents and regulations. Proficient in writing reports and business correspondence. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Other Skills: Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English fluently. Embraces and articulates the hospice philosophy. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Flexibility to work nights and weekends as required. Willingness to travel and provide care for geriatric and terminally ill patients.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While executing the responsibilities of this role, the employee is regularly required to use hands for various tasks, communicate verbally, and hear effectively. Frequent standing, sitting, and reaching are required, along with occasional walking, climbing, kneeling, or crouching. The employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds regularly. Specific vision abilities required include close vision. The work environment characteristics described here are typical of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. Exposure to infectious diseases may occur while working alongside clinical caregivers. The noise level in the work environment is generally quiet.
