Breast Ultrasound Technologist Job Description

At Hackensack Meridian Health, we are seeking a highly skilled Breast Ultrasound Technologist to join our team. As a key member of our Breast Care department, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to our mission of transforming healthcare.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of specialized technical tasks in Breast Care utilizing high frequency sound waves to assist medical and professional personnel in detecting anatomical abnormalities of the breast.
  • Conduct procedures according to departmental format, completing exams in allotted time.
  • Perform required daily clerical duties, including the use of Epic, computer system, patient scheduling, and other computer systems added by the Medical Center.
  • Identify patient's images with the correct name, MRN, and ensure that images are correctly marked to the breast side and that all images have Technologist's initials.
  • Assist Radiologist with biopsy studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.
  • Determine, prepare, and set up medical supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Prepare patients for diagnostic procedures, explain procedures, measure, and position patients for each anatomical view.
  • Perform portable breast imaging on ER and inpatients as needed.
  • Responsible for interviewing and discharging patients after their procedure.
  • Ensure proper labeling of specimen bags.
  • Evaluate technical quality of images.
  • Obtain and process images of pathogenic conditions in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.
  • Maintain records of ultrasound taken, archiving, and de-archiving data as required.
  • Calibrate, clean, and perform routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, supplies, and equipment. Stock and replenish supplies as required.
  • Lift a minimum of 25 lbs., push and pull a minimum of 50 lbs., and stand a minimum of 8 hours a day.
  • Greet in/out patients when they arrive for their exam utilizing A.I.D.E.T. standards.
  • Responsible for scheduled shifts, including holidays and weekends.
  • Overtime as needed to provide continual quality patient care.
  • Identify the needs of the patient population served, modify, and deliver care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing, and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, parent, and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
  • Adhere to the policies of Employee ID, Standards of behavior, Attendance, Punctuality, and Organizational Competencies.
  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisory personnel.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an approved Ultrasound School.
  • A.R.D.M.S registered.
  • A minimum of 2 years training in Allied Health/College.
  • Certified in Breast within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be able to do CPR.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certification or Breast Sonography Certification.
  • Maintains 30 CEU Credits within a three-year period.

Working Conditions:

  • Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
