Position Overview

The Reliability Automation Specialist plays a crucial role in overseeing operational support and troubleshooting for the utilities Automation System, ensuring compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) within a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing environment. This position involves providing engineering support for utility control system projects, showcasing expertise in the design, configuration, integration, implementation, and qualification of automation control solutions, including integration with OSI-Pi historian.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver engineering expertise to facilitate the design, installation, commissioning, validation, and operation of automation systems.
  • Oversee the Utility Automation Reliability Program, which includes:
    - Executing maintenance strategies for new and modified equipment
    - Managing data integrity within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and executing Reliability Centered Maintenance Improvements
    - Developing and implementing preventative maintenance procedures for automation systems
    - Continuously improving maintenance programs, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and spare parts management
    - Leading equipment replacement initiatives as part of lifecycle improvement and continuous enhancement planning
    - Implementing and monitoring predictive maintenance strategies
    - Overseeing equipment reconditioning to restore optimal performance
    - Executing upgrades to enhance safety, operational efficiency, and extend equipment lifespan
    - Collaborating with local and global partners to formulate an asset management plan, including capital requests.
  • Provide technical guidance throughout all phases of the automation system, leveraging data and engineering principles to propose enhancements based on industry best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with cGMP regulations for all automation systems, focusing on:
    - Maintaining equipment to ensure high reliability and maximize useful life
    - Reviewing environmental monitoring and laboratory sample release test results
    - Managing deviations and investigations with timely resolutions
    - Safely addressing process issues to improve efficiency and reduce waste
    - Conducting root cause analysis for equipment and operational events, overseeing change controls and investigations
    - Leading investigations as a subject matter expert in automation systems operation and troubleshooting
    - Developing and maintaining control drawings, flow diagrams, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
    - Performing periodic quality assurance inspections and initiating necessary corrective actions.
  • Ensure data integrity within control systems and facilitate user-friendly navigation, including alarm rationalization for efficient alarm response.
  • Support all aspects of Johnson Controls Metasys for Validated Environments software configuration tools and Rockwell Automation Control Systems, understanding coordination protocols between platforms such as Allen Bradley, MODBUS, and BACNet.
  • Document hardware/software modifications and system functional specifications in collaboration with Execution Systems.
  • Commit to continuous improvement by enhancing job knowledge and proficiency in biopharmaceutical engineering best practices and technologies.
  • Adhere to CSL Behring's Safety Program, including Health and Safety mandates and OSHA requirements.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned by senior management.
Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

• Minimum of 3 years of relevant automation/controls experience with a Bachelor's degree or 2 years with a Master's degree.

• Fundamental knowledge of core engineering principles, including fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.

• Strong hands-on experience with Building Automation Systems (Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Rockwell, etc.) and SCADA systems.

• Proficiency in configuring, troubleshooting, and utilizing Windows Operating Systems, Networking, virtualization, and Databases for Control System Applications.

• Experience with data historians (e.g., OSI-PI), MS-SQL, and reporting tools.

• Working knowledge of Control and Instrumentation for facility control systems, including PLCs and instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, level).

• Familiarity with pharmaceutical process sanitary connections, valves, and supply loops.

• Experience with Quality Management and Change Control Systems.

• Knowledge of computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

• Excellent problem-solving abilities and capacity to work collaboratively or independently with minimal supervision.

• Proven ability to manage contractors and interface with multiple departments to oversee projects.

• Understanding of manufacturing processes.

• Proficiency in MS Project and AutoCAD is preferred.
