Job Title: Chief Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Engineer to join our team at First Presbyterian Church Fort Worth. As a key member of our facilities management team, you will be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of our properties, ensuring that they are safe, clean, and well-maintained for our congregation and community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage all preventative and ongoing maintenance, as well as all facility-related issues for Penn St. and Hemphill church properties, equipment, facilities, and grounds.
  • Leadership responsibilities include participating in the department's recruiting, selection, and hiring process; evaluating and coaching performance; developing and upskilling the talent; and preparing the talent for succession management.
  • Establish best practices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to streamline workflows and provide a strong foundation for sustainable growth. Document and implement SOPs related to the intricacies of all facilities, preventative maintenance duties, and maintain protocols for safety and security.
  • Serve as a liaison between upper management and team members, promoting transparency and clarity in all communications.
  • Oversee the functionality and safety of all assets, including physical structures, mechanical equipment, electrical systems, heating and cooling, and grounds.
  • Identify potential single points of failure, ensure cross-training and document contingency plans to minimize risks.
  • Lead and motivate a diverse team to achieve departmental and organizational goals, providing clear direction and guidance while fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Provide regular updates to internal stakeholders and management on project status and departmental performance. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and contracted services, ensuring timely job completion. Collaborate with business office and external contractors for specialized repairs and maintenance.
  • Conduct daily property walks and facility inspections to proactively identify and implement solutions. Comply with safety regulations and building codes and address hazards promptly.
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment. Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections.
  • Respond effectively and promptly to maintenance emergencies, minimizing disruption to activities.
  • Follow safety protocols and use products and equipment per manufacturer's instructions and generally accepted practices.
  • Ensure all required professional inspections and certifications are current and compliant.
  • Document and track routine preventative maintenance for HVAC, vehicles, and other systems (both mechanical and non-mechanical).
  • Embody and uphold the organizational core values: radical hospitality, intentional unity, transformational relationships, and humble service.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Church and the ministries by performing additional duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • At least seven (7) years of experience utilizing generally accepted construction and repair procedures and materials used in the areas of carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and related trades.
  • Four (4) or more years of previous leadership experience within Facilities, Operations, or Property Management.
  • Previous project management experience is required, including planning and communicating status updates.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, especially Excel and Outlook.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving (MVR) record.
  • Experience in church life, regardless of denomination, is desirable.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Effectively coach and manage a diverse team, ensuring productivity and alignment with organizational goals. Foster a positive and respectful work environment with open communications and collaborative teamwork.
  • Ability to engage in problem resolution, assess situations objectively, and potentially manage unexpected emergent situations with composure.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks, ability to adapt to changing circumstances, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Thorough understanding of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems, as well as of preventative and corrective maintenance procedures and best practices.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations, building codes, and other relevant safety and compliance standards.
  • Ability to use basic math and read a measuring tape. Ability to read and interpret plans, specs, instructions, and blueprints in English.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other departments and external contractors.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of customer service.
  • Fluent English communication skills are required to effectively communicate and positively interact with church staff and congregants.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship (currently or in the future).
Work Environment:

The physical demands reflect requirements to successfully perform the essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be provided for individuals with disabilities.

  • This role is crucial in ensuring all facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained to provide a hospitable atmosphere for all visitors, congregants, staff, and neighbors; and therefore, regular onsite attendance is required. This position regularly works on call (evenings and weekends) and onsite attendance is required during large services, such as Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, and some Sundays.
  • Constant movement throughout buildings, properties, and levels, and ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, twist, squat, crawl, push/pull, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly using proper lifting techniques.
  • Ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps and the like using feet and legs or hands and arms.
  • Digital dexterity is required to reach items with hands and arms or operate hand and power tools.
  • Visual acuity to perform activities, such as hazard identification; counting; or reading blueprints, schedules, instructions, or a tape measure.
  • Must hear with aid, converse with stakeholders, and respond quickly to sounds or emergency situations in potentially noisy environments.
  • Ability to operate equipment or power tools commonly used in general cleaning/maintenance and work safely around moving machinery.
  • The work environment is primarily indoors with occasional outdoor activities in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequent exposure to bodily fluids, illness-causing bacteria and viruses, dust, cleaning supplies, or other particles are expected. May be exposed to slippery or uneven walking surfaces.
  • Must adapt to workplace stressors like noise, emergent situations, and competing priorities while maintaining the safety and cleanliness of the facilities.
  • Ability to drive and travel between our two locations (Penn St. & Hemphill St.) as needed.
Benefits:
