Job Responsibilities

The Preservation Division of Columbia University Libraries is seeking an experienced Preservation and Metadata Specialist to support our comprehensive preservation program. This role will be responsible for handling rare and valuable materials, as well as confidential financial records of patrons and faculty members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain reprography workflow, including accepting orders from library staff and patrons, preparing and prioritizing orders, and advising customers about digital products.
  • Create and enhance metadata for patron orders following library standards and best practices, prepare files and metadata, and perform regular batch uploads to the CMS.
  • Perform physical preparation of materials, including rare and fragile items, pick up and deliver materials, and complete clerical and bibliographic tasks associated with preservation photocopy workflows.
  • Order supplies and complete other clerical duties.

Requirements

  • High school diploma and/or its equivalent and one year of relevant experience are required.
  • Experience with image editing (Photoshop preferred) and spreadsheet programs (Excel or equivalent).
  • Experience using metadata schemas and standards, bibliographic databases, and CMS systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Technically proficient and ability to learn new digital tools quickly.
  • Ability to handle fragile materials with care and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain production levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college.
  • Experience working in libraries.
  • Familiarity with OCLC Connexion and cataloging standards and practices.
  • Experience using OpenRefine and command line operations.
  • Knowledge of imaging standards and best practices in a library setting.
