The Colorado Springs office of Sherman & Howard L.L.C. is in search of an enthusiastic paralegal to support its Labor & Employment Department. This role involves providing assistance to fellow paralegals and attorneys in various tasks essential for delivering legal services to clients. Proficiency with technical systems, particularly litigation support databases and trial presentation software, is crucial. Candidates should possess the capability and eagerness to quickly learn new systems and apply them effectively in a high-volume environment. Familiarity with Relativity and Trial Director is highly advantageous. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience across all stages of trial. Above all, teamwork is essential, as the paralegal must respond to both internal and external requests promptly, accurately, and professionally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare documents with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring correct formatting, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Conduct thorough fact investigations and research, both online and within case materials, organizing and compiling information effectively.
- Assist in drafting and finalizing legal documents.
- Manage and maintain both hard copy and electronic case files and document organization.
- Utilize technical databases for uploading, searching, and retrieving supporting documents, exercising independent judgment and making suitable recommendations to supervising attorneys.
- Oversee daily workflow and case management to meet project deadlines efficiently.
- Compile information for arbitrators, including Simpson reports, for attorney review prior to arbitrator selection and coordinate with Union counsel for scheduling.
- Arrange meetings for arbitration and trial preparation ahead of scheduled events.
- Communicate with clients, Union counsel, and arbitrators to coordinate arbitration hearings.
- Assist in preparing for arbitration hearings, including drafting outlines for testimony and exhibit lists, compiling necessary documents, and organizing hearing notebooks.
- Maintain the arbitration awards database, reviewing awards and integrating relevant issues into the database.
- Provide guidance to other employees and representatives of third parties collaborating with the firm.
- Perform data entry for case management and document maintenance within the firm's Document Management System (DMS).
- Deliver high-level administrative support as needed.
- Ensure timely submission of time entries for client billing purposes.
- Communicate effectively with legal and support departments/personnel and clients as directed by attorneys.
- Translate complex concepts into legal instruments with exceptional writing skills.
- Consistently meet the firm's expectation of 1500 billable hours, which includes client billable, no-charge client, approved office management, and professional time.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's Degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
- A certificate of completion from a Paralegal school or institute is preferred.
- 2-5 years of experience in litigation/employment law is preferred.
- Experience in labor arbitrations is preferred.
- Familiarity with the processes, systems, and methodologies of mid-to-large sized firms.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining professionalism.
- Knowledge of legal research techniques and software systems for conducting legal research.
- Understanding of court rules and procedures.
- Familiarity with law office practices and procedures.
- Proficiency in software systems such as Word, DMS, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to build rapport with attorneys, clients, and colleagues.
