Position Overview
Senior Polymer Materials Scientist

Job Summary
This role is pivotal in driving the growth of our business through innovative product and process development, as well as providing exceptional operational and customer support.


Focus on enhancing the division's expertise in engineered mineral solutions tailored for thermoplastics, thermosets, and rubber applications, both for established and emerging products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
  • Oversee projects of moderate complexity and scope.
  • Contribute significantly to the establishment of team objectives and goals.
  • Lead or support the development, testing, and characterization of new products/processes/methods, ensuring alignment with product applications and facilitating scale-up from laboratory to commercial production.
  • Document scientific findings, experimental outcomes, and project milestones through comprehensive technical reports.
  • Present project results effectively through technical and business-oriented presentations, both internally and at industry conferences.
  • Identify and pursue development projects that align with market trends and strategic business goals.
  • Stay updated with the latest technical literature and intellectual property, leveraging this knowledge to inspire new product ideas.
  • Act as a liaison with the Intellectual Property and Legal teams, translating scientific discoveries into patent applications.
  • Build and nurture relationships with technical contacts at customer sites, service providers, and marketing teams.
  • Collaborate on external R&D initiatives with academic institutions and other organizations.
  • Work alongside other Imerys divisions to assess and integrate emerging technologies.
  • Support the professional development of junior scientists and technicians.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for domestic and international engagements.
Required Skills and Attributes

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a collaborative spirit.
  • Strong technical acumen, troubleshooting capabilities, and data analysis proficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work independently while managing multiple projects effectively.
  • Skilled in conveying complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis; familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) is advantageous.
  • Experience in additive functionalization and interfacial chemistry.
  • Capable of establishing standard polymer testing methods and training technicians for accurate results.
  • Deep understanding of the interplay between the physical and chemical properties of inorganic materials and their effects on polymer performance.
  • Desire to engage in hands-on laboratory work or customer facility interactions.
  • Ability to lead a diverse, multidisciplinary New Product Development team.
  • Adaptability to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
  • Experience with thermoset composites is beneficial.
  • Background in industrial mineral processing, including thermal processing, milling, and classification, is a plus.
  • High level of expertise in powder processing technology is advantageous.
  • Experience with data analytics and machine learning applications in material science is a plus.
Education and Experience

Industrial experience in polymers/material science with a solid foundation in structure-property relationships is essential. A PhD in chemical, plastics, or material science with a minimum of 5 years of experience is preferred; alternatively, a Master's degree with at least 8 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience will be considered.

Experience in applications related to transportation, packaging, construction, and electronics is advantageous.
