Peer Advocate for Young Individuals

Cayuga Counseling Services, Inc. is seeking a dedicated Youth and Family Peer Advocate to deliver both formal and informal assistance to youth and families facing various social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and behavioral challenges. This role is crucial in providing support within home, school, and community settings, particularly following traumatic experiences. We are an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Upon receiving referrals, offer peer-based, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, and non-judgmental outreach, mentorship, and support aligned with the goals outlined in the youth's care plan.
- Execute interventions from the youth's care plan, focusing on skill development, coaching, self-advocacy, empowerment, and fostering community connections and natural support systems.
- Organize group activities, including resiliency and recovery support sessions for clients.
- Engage in local, state, and federal meetings as permitted by your schedule.
- Participate in Youth Peer Advocate training sessions.
- Ensure timely and efficient documentation of activities.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations and obtain necessary releases of information.
- Assist with transportation needs as required.
- Engage in supervision processes.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must have clearance through the NYS Central Registry for Child Abuse and the NYS Staff Exclusion List.
- Applicants must be aged between 18-30 and have self-identified as consumers of mental health services, special education services, juvenile justice, or foster care, or be in recovery from substance abuse, utilizing their lived experiences to support others in their resilience, recovery, and wellness.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of families, demonstrating active listening, compassion, and a commitment to supporting youth in achieving their goals.
- Extensive knowledge of community services and the ability to collaborate effectively with them; must also possess the capability to document activities accurately.
- A valid NYS driver's license and proof of automobile insurance are required.
Benefits Offered:
- 3 weeks of paid time off (PTO) in the first year, increasing to 4 weeks in the second year.
- 48 hours of wellness time annually (accruing 4 hours per month) for personal self-care.
- 96 hours of sick leave annually (accruing 8 hours per month).
