Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Police Officer to join our team at UNC Health Care. As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our patients, visitors, and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Maintain high visibility through vehicle and foot patrol to deter criminal activity.
  2. Direct traffic flow, initiate traffic accident investigations, and conduct non-arrest detentions as required.
  3. Detect and deter crime, conduct searches within legal and safe parameters, and process related arrests.
  4. Make motor vehicle stops, detect DWI situations, and process related arrests.
  5. Testify in court to provide evidence or as a witness in traffic or criminal cases.
  6. Utilize citizen input in the identification of community issues, develop community contacts, and coordinate community programs.
  7. Recognize and implement crime prevention techniques, including environmental factors conducive to criminal activity.
  8. Identify and secure crime scenes, process crime scenes, and use legal interrogation techniques to obtain information from witnesses, victims, and suspects.
  9. Record facts and prepare reports to document preliminary and follow-up investigations.
  10. Identify offenses, follow established procedures for submission of evidence, and take appropriate action, including obtaining and executing search and arrest warrants when indicated.
  11. Conduct investigations related to misdemeanors and felonies.
  12. Develop prosecution summaries and testify in court when needed.
  13. Communicate with other law enforcement agencies according to department procedures.
  14. Operate and properly use the Police Pak call log, prioritize calls appropriately, and obtain pertinent information to effectively communicate to field staff.
  15. Perform a variety of tasks, including answering the phone, handling walk-in traffic, responding to radio communications, processing alarms, operating the CCTV system, and accomplishing responsibilities with a calm demeanor, particularly during stressful events.
  16. Conduct appropriate inspections at the beginning and ending of each shift and report any damage or needed action.
  17. Properly operate and account for all vehicle equipment, including police radios, emergency lights, and sirens.
  18. Report immediately to UNC Health Care for traffic and crowd control when recalled for disaster or other emergency situations.
  19. Transport all hospital bank deposits and mail.
  20. Accompany visitors, volunteers, and hospital staff to their vehicles when requested in a timely and professional manner.
  21. Ensure appropriate and professional interaction with all employees, patients, and visitors.
  22. Be flexible to work varied shifts as needed to ensure adequate departmental coverage or in the event of an emergency.
Requirements

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual with a high school diploma or equivalent and a valid North Carolina Driver's License. Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment is required.

At least two years of law enforcement experience in a healthcare or campus law enforcement setting is preferred.

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with patients, their families, the public, and hospital team members are essential. Good decision-making and critical thinking skills are also required. Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English is necessary. Proficiency with MS Office and the ability to learn new software rapidly are also required.

Valid NC Driver's License: Yes

If driving a UNC Health Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
