Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to join our team at Jefferson County Schools. As a Special Education Teacher, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality education and support to students with diverse needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) that cater to the unique needs of students with special needs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and other support staff to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Provide direct instruction, accommodations, and modifications to students with special needs, as outlined in their IEPs.
  • Assess student progress and adjust instructional strategies to meet the changing needs of students.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and other stakeholders to ensure a collaborative approach to student support.
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices in special education, including laws, regulations, and research-based interventions.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in special education.
  • Contribute to a positive and supportive school culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate in special education.
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement curriculum and programming specific to the needs of assigned students.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and assist with student toileting and specific hygiene needs.
  • Ability to transfer students, feed students, and provide physical intervention when required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with assistance.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.
