Highway Maintenance Technician

Key Responsibilities- Perform safety inspections and report on vehicle condition and air pressure, brakes, mechanical and engine fluids levels, water, brake lights, headlights, and other operational systems and equipment.
- Operate vehicles under adverse weather conditions and work schedule outside normal working hours as scheduled and/or required.
- Inspect and operate on and off-road vehicles and equipment, including snow plow trucks, semi-tractors, and trailers.
- Perform labor-intensive duties using equipment and tools, including record meter readings, breaking, mixing, and placing concrete and asphalt.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Three years of work experience in the operation of single or tandem axle vehicles.
- Documented evidence of 80 hours of supervised on-the-job training preferred.
- A valid Class B, NM Commercial Driver's license.
- Ability to read and understand written and oral instruction in English.
- Ability to operate listed vehicles with either standard or automatic transmissions.
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to snow, wind, possible lightning, and extreme cold and heat. Work is conducted primarily during daylight hours, with occasional work at night or in inclement weather.
Equipment, Tools, and Materials- Utilize vehicles described in the Essential Duties section.
- Utilize hand-operated tools, including shovels, rakes, axes, picks, pitchforks, chain saws, digging bars, handheld weed trimmers, sledgehammers, hand tools, tamper, jackhammers, augers, and cutting torches.
- Petroleum products, tire chains, construction signs, chemicals, paint, water, weeds, salt, sand, and canvas are also used.
The Highway Maintainer I must be able to ask questions of foremen, listen to and follow verbal directions in English, and communicate verbally with co-workers. The employee must also be knowledgeable of all traffic laws and regulations and able to accurately read all gauges on equipment and make correct judgments in the operation of equipment.
Physical Functions- Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to sit for up to four hours at a time and stand/walk for up to eight hours per day.
- Ability to climb in and out of equipment cabs at least six times daily.
- Ability to crouch, kneel, and remain in a prone position for up to 30 minutes at a time.
