About the Role

The School of Pharmacy at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Academic Advisor to provide specialized academic advising services to our students. As a key member of the School's advising team, you will work closely with students, faculty, and staff to ensure that students receive the support and guidance they need to achieve their academic goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advise students on academic policies, procedures, and programs of study, and help them develop academic plans that align with their goals.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records on students, using tools like Navigate and DegreeWorks to track student progress and identify areas for support.
  • Document all advising interactions with students, and use this data to inform advising strategies and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with academic and operational units to identify and address barriers to student success, and develop programs and initiatives to support student engagement and retention.
  • Teach students how to navigate the university, make informed decisions, and take responsibility for their academic success.
  • Identify and support students who are struggling or at-risk, and make referrals to other university resources as needed.
  • Review and approve graduation applications, and assist students in removing barriers to graduation.
  • Coordinate and process academic appeals, and collaborate with departmental and university partners to support student success.
Qualifications

We are seeking an individual with a complex set of technical and interpersonal skills, including:

  • A minimum of three years of professional advising experience in a college or university setting.
  • Knowledge of theory and application of effective advising techniques.
  • Ability to learn and understand curriculum requirements of assigned and other departments.
  • Ability to think critically and troubleshoot complex academic issues to bring to a swift resolution.
  • Excellent written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience using Navigate, DegreeWorks, Banner, eServices, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite to implement inclusive and intentional advising strategies.
  • A Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

We also welcome applicants with experience in creating, implementing, and assessing programming and/or high-impact practices in higher education, as well as experience working with at-risk student populations and collaborative work, including service on committees related to student engagement, student success, departmental service, or academic advising.
