Strategic Communications Director for City of Chicago

We are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Communications Director to join our team at the City of Chicago. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications plans that promote the city's mission and vision.
Job SummaryThe Strategic Communications Director will lead our public affairs unit, overseeing the development and implementation of communication strategies that engage with various stakeholders, including community groups, media outlets, and government officials. You will work closely with department leaders to identify opportunities to increase the city's presence and policy agenda, both internally and externally.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and Implement Communication Strategies
You will develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies that align with the city's mission and goals. This includes creating and maintaining a positive image of the department through media relations, social media, and other channels.
Lead Public Affairs UnitAs the leader of the public affairs unit, you will oversee the scheduling, staffing, and workflow of the front desk reception team. You will also train, mentor, and support staff on customer service standards, departmental programs, and services.
Serve as Department SpokespersonYou will act as the department spokesperson to media outlets, responding to inquiries and providing timely information to the public.
Oversee Social Media PresenceYou will establish and manage social media accounts to increase audience size and racial/ethnic makeup, ensuring timely distribution of information.
Research, Write, and Edit Speeches and Talking PointsYou will research, write, and edit speeches and talking points for department leaders, tying issues to public policy initiatives.
Review and Approve Budget RequestsYou will review and approve budget requests for the public affairs unit, ensuring alignment with departmental priorities.
QualificationsTo be successful in this role, you will need:
- Nine (9) years of work experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role; OR
- Associates degree in Journalism, Communications, or a directly related field, plus seven (7) years of work experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role; OR
- Bachelors degree in Journalism, Communications, or a directly related field, plus five (5) years of work experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role; OR
- Masters degree in Journalism, Communications, or a directly related field, plus four (4) years of work experience in the development and implementation of public information programs, of which two (2) years are in a supervisory role
Prior experience managing web and social media content, drafting press releases and media advisories, and being detail-oriented when composing and proofreading materials is highly desirable. Additionally, knowledge of cultural competency, ability to work effectively in a team environment, and self-motivation are valuable assets.
Estimated Salary RangeThe estimated salary range for this position is $108,060.00 per year, based on the city's cost of living and market conditions.
