About the Role

This is a senior leadership position responsible for developing and directing comprehensive audit and compliance programs for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The successful candidate will report directly to the University Board of Visitors and the Health System Board of Directors while reporting administratively to the President.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement risk-based audit and compliance plans for the University and Health System
  • Establish and maintain active and continuous quality control programs
  • Conduct investigations and special reviews as necessary or requested by the Boards or senior leadership
  • Coordinate external audit and other external control reviews and investigations
  • Recruit and maintain resources in appropriate numbers and competencies to achieve the annual audit and compliance plans
  • Identify the professional developmental needs of the staff and create strategies to meet those needs
  • Provide advice and counsel to management regarding new initiatives and strategies
  • Report to the Boards quarterly the results of audits, compliance reviews, and other significant developments or issues
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or related area of specialization
  • CPA or CIA certification or relevant healthcare certification
  • Proven leadership success in organizations of comparable complexity with the ability to work effectively and independently at a senior leadership level
  • Five years of supervisory experience as an audit or compliance manager or equivalent
  • Proven ability to plan, implement, and lead the audit or compliance function
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and complete multiple, simultaneous complex projects in a timely manner
  • Strong technical skills in the areas of finance, accounting, auditing, compliance, and financial reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to deal effectively and tactfully with individuals at all levels of the institution including the Board
  • Ability to develop and foster an open and trusting environment while embodying a commitment to improvement and betterment of the institution
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive and confidential information in line with institutional values and applicable laws
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as an executive leader at the Commonwealth of Virginia
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in business, accounting, or a related area of specialization
  • Experience in higher education institutions, healthcare institutions, and related enterprises
