Job Overview

The Surgical Pathology Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the pathologist during the acquisition, preparation, and analysis of surgical tissue samples and autopsies. This position ensures that all specimens are properly documented, processed, and disposed of safely and efficiently.

The Surgical Pathology Assistant (SPA) is a skilled allied health professional dedicated to assisting the pathologist in the examination of surgical specimens and conducting postmortem evaluations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Aids in the preparation and execution of surgical specimen dissection and gross examination. Collects clinical history, laboratory data, imaging studies, and scans as necessary. Accurately describes the gross characteristics of surgical specimens and prepares tissues for processing for light microscopy. Obtains samples for specialized studies such as flow cytometry, image analysis, research, cytogenetics, cultures, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence. Captures images of gross specimens.

2. Coordinates and/or conducts gross examination and dissection of surgical specimens and postmortem evaluations. Guides and supervises the performance of staff involved in processing and dissecting biopsy specimens and non-complex surgical specimens.

3. Manages activities in the Frozen Section Room; assists in the Frozen Section Room. Executes specialized procedures including frozen section slide preparation and triage of tissue for tumor banking and relevant studies.

4. Supports the pathologist in the preparation and execution of human postmortem examinations. Ensures legal authorization for autopsy, gathers medical records for review, collaborates with the attending pathologist to identify special techniques to be employed during the examination, prepares tissues for light microscopy processing and specialized studies, and drafts preliminary summaries of clinical history.

5. Ensures that all specimens are accurately logged and tracked.

6. Collects data and compiles statistical reports such as turnaround times and data analysis.

7. Provides training to pathology residents and surgical fellows on appropriate gross examination techniques.

8. Performs additional related duties, including maintaining surgical and autopsy pathology protocols.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Pathology Assistant program or Master's degree in Pathology Assistant Program
  • PA (ASCP) certification is required for both
  • 2-3 years of experience in surgical grossing and autopsy
