Job Overview

The Surgical Pathology Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the pathologist during the collection, preparation, and analysis of surgical tissue samples and autopsies. This position ensures that all specimens are accurately documented, processed, and disposed of safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assists in the preparation and execution of surgical specimen dissection and detailed gross description. Collects relevant clinical history, laboratory data, imaging studies, and scans as necessary. Accurately describes the gross characteristics of surgical specimens and prepares tissues for light microscopy processing. Obtains samples for specialized studies, including flow cytometry, image analysis, research, cytogenetics, cultures, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence. Captures images of gross specimens.
  • Coordinates and/or conducts gross description and dissection of surgical specimens and postmortem examinations. Provides guidance and oversight to staff involved in processing and dissecting biopsy specimens and non-complex surgical specimens.
  • Manages activities in the Frozen Section Room; assists in the operations of the Frozen Section Room. Executes specialized procedures, including frozen section slide preparation and the triage of tissue for tumor banking and relevant studies.
  • Supports the pathologist in the preparation and execution of human postmortem examinations. Ensures legal authorization for autopsy, gathers medical records for review, collaborates with the attending pathologist to determine special techniques to be employed during the examination, prepares tissues for light microscopy processing and special studies, and compiles preliminary summaries of clinical history.
  • Ensures all specimens are accurately accessioned.
  • Collects data and prepares statistical reports, including turnaround times and data analysis.
  • Provides training to pathology residents and surgical fellows on proper gross description techniques.
  • Performs additional related duties, including maintaining surgical and autopsy pathology protocols.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Science with a minimum of 5 years of experience as a Pathologist Assistant, or a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a Pathology Assistant program with no prior experience.
  • At least 1 year of experience in surgical grossing and autopsy.
  • PA-ASCP Board Certification.
  • New York State Path-A License.
