Overview of the Role

The Field Service Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of various heavy machinery, including construction and rail-bound equipment. This role demands adherence to manufacturer guidelines, company protocols, and safety regulations.

The position involves approximately 30% travel, with accommodations and daily allowances provided.

  • Must possess a safety-first mindset, demonstrate self-motivation, and maintain a positive attitude while learning.
  • Basic understanding of diesel and gasoline engines, with troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Strong background in hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, valves, and hoses.
  • Proficient in 12-24 Volt electrical systems.
  • Knowledgeable in drive train systems, including fluid mechanics, chain drives, and gear assemblies.
  • Experienced in welding techniques, including arc and MIG welding, along with fabrication and repair skills.
  • Mechanic must provide quality tools up to 3⁄4 drive.

Key Responsibilities


• Operate and inspect heavy machinery to identify and resolve mechanical issues.

• Conduct tests on mechanical products and equipment post-repair to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications.

• Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment utilizing hoists and hand tools.

• Adjust and repair systems related to ignition, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, and steering.

• Maintain and repair chassis, frames, and bodies of equipment.

• Repair and service diesel and gasoline engines.

• Maintain and repair batteries, brakes, and valves.

• Assist in inspections and safety evaluations.

• Utilize hoisting and jacking equipment, power tools, measuring instruments, gauges, and meters.

Additional Responsibilities


• Travel to various job sites to perform maintenance and repairs.

• Document detailed maintenance and repair activities.

Required Qualifications


• Ideally possess 5+ years of experience, combined with vocational training in diesel equipment and mechanical repair of construction machinery.

• Hold a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record and pass a drug screening.

• Ability to comprehend and interpret procedural manuals, hydraulic and electrical schematics.

• Capable of maintaining accurate records.

• Ability to follow instructions efficiently and meet deadlines.

• Comfortable working in both shop and field settings.

• Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions relevant to the tasks performed.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is preferred (Outlook, Excel, Word).

Physical Demands


• Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors.

• Regularly engage in physical activities requiring significant use of arms and legs, including standing, lifting, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, and handling materials and tools.

• Use hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment necessary for repairs.

• Lift, push, pull, and carry heavy items, machinery, and tools weighing up to 50 pounds.

• Work in proximity to vehicles and machinery with moving components.

• Exposure to exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.

• May encounter harsh weather conditions and loud noise levels.
