Wilderness Camp Director

The YMCA is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Wilderness Camp Executive Director. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the camp, developing strategies for financial sustainability, and marketing the organization to secure funding.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Management
- Supervise a team of program directors and property managers to ensure the smooth operation of the camp.
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a seasonal staff of 60+.
- Communicate effectively with program supervisors, full-time, and seasonal staff to build skills and achieve individual and location goals.
- Program Development and Quality
- Oversee the development and implementation of high-quality outdoor education, team-building, and retreat programs.
- Ensure the delivery of programming in leadership development, progressive skill development, and social-emotional learning.
- Perform daily operations of camper services, including risk management, crisis response, and facility excellence.
- Financial Management
- Manage the budget, including making fiscally responsible decisions, developing site-based business plans, and setting strategic direction.
- Develop and implement strategies for recruiting and retaining a diverse seasonal workforce.
- Conduct annual reviews of part-time and full-time team members.
- Marketing and Fundraising
- Collaborate with the marketing team to promote trips and review and adjust offerings as needed.
- Achieve fundraising goals, including Annual Fund, capital campaigns, and endowments.
- Partner with the Community Council Chair to implement and carry out their chart of work.
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of management experience, including supervision and budget management.
- Skills and Qualifications
- Experience supervising wilderness programs.
- Progressive programming and management experience in an outdoor wilderness tripping environment.
- Willingness to live on-site in camp-provided, rustic housing during summer program months.
- Willingness to travel seasonally to camp during fall, winter, and spring to support on-site programming.
- On-call 24 hours a day for four months of the year to ensure safety and Emergency Action Plan protocol.
- Critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Effective communication and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
- Certifications and Training
- American Camp Association accreditation standards and Department of Health Standards.
- Business and Leadership Skills
- Experience in fundraising and financial management.
- Strong business acumen and strategic thinking.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
- Outdoor Education and Leadership
- Experience in outdoor education and leadership development.
- Knowledge of wilderness risk management and emergency response protocols.
- Ability to develop and implement high-quality outdoor education programs.
