Job Summary:

As a Patient Care Technician I at UTMB Health, you will play a vital role in providing basic technical assistance and supportive patient care to meet the needs of individual patients throughout assigned areas. Your primary responsibility will be to collect, report, and document data related to patient needs and emergencies, while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collect vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and collect specimens.

• Obtain blood samples by venipuncture and acquire 12 lead EKG.

• Perform and report POCT and assist with patient activities and care as assigned by the charge nurse/designee as indicated by the patient's plan of care.

• Provide for patients' personal hygiene, including bathing, oral suctioning, and superficial wound care, as well as assist with chronic wound care, skincare for patients with TED hose, SCD, casts, skeletal pins, and assist with elimination, care for incontinent patients, care for patients with urinary catheters, assist or give cleansing enemas, sitz baths, non-sterile douches, and provide ostomy care.

• Assist with feeding and ambulate, position, and turn patients, and care for patients with altered mobility.

• Assist with patient safety related to age and condition, assist with patient restraints and patient-specific safety precautions, and collect, report, and document data related to patient needs/emergencies and unusual patient and family behavior.

• Care for patients from a correctional environment and maintain patient care areas with appropriate supplies.

• Assist with patient requests for other hospital services and maintain a clean, safe environment, performing and/or assisting others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures.

Requirements:

• High school or equivalent and completion of one of the following technical programs: recognized Nurse Assistant program, Medical Assistant program, Medical Corpsman program, EMT program, UTMB Hospital Aide Training Program, or two years of experience in a direct patient care environment.

• Certified MA, PCT, or CNA at time of hire or enrolled in a recognized School of Nursing and completed the first semester of education which contains clinical concepts and health assessment or the equivalent.

• BLS certification required.
