Position Summary: We are seeking a skilled professional to take on the role of Lead Underwriting Specialist within our dynamic underwriting team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive training and ongoing support to the underwriting team.
  • Collaborate with management to ensure adherence to company standards while maintaining the quality of originated loans.
  • Engage in departmental planning and process enhancement initiatives.
  • Provide expert guidance to team members regarding loan files and underwriting queries.
  • Conduct secondary reviews as required by management.
  • Evaluate specific loan denials and assist in resolving closing challenges.
  • Maintain updated agency guidelines and ensure effective communication with team members.
  • Oversee compliance with internal loan program summaries and investor guidelines.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new underwriters and track their progress.
  • Manage daily pipeline activities, including monitoring service level agreements (SLAs) and workload distribution.
  • Address post-closing exceptions and identify training opportunities based on trending issues.
  • Collaborate with outsourced teams to ensure quality and productivity.
  • Mentor team members on underwriting practices and error correction.
  • Work cohesively with all stakeholders to facilitate successful loan funding.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; a college degree is preferred.
  • DE/LAPP designation is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, particularly in government and conventional loans.
  • At least 3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, and VA underwriting guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, including ECOA, HMDA, and RESPA.
  • Proficient in loan origination systems, with Encompass experience required.
