Kennel Assistant Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Veterinary Kennel Assistant to join our team at Dix Hills Animal Hospital. The ideal candidate will be responsible for assisting veterinary staff in examining and monitoring animal patients, restraining patients, recovering patients after procedures, and maintaining clean and sanitary conditions in exam and treatment rooms and kennel.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Care for Hospitalized and Boarded Animals: Provide top-notch care for animals by bathing, feeding, watering, and exercising them.
  • Sanitize Examining Rooms and Surface Areas: Maintain a clean and sanitary environment by sanitizing examining rooms and surface areas.
  • Assist with Exams and Procedures: Assist veterinary staff in holding and restraining animals during exams and assist with non-surgical procedures.
  • Provide Post-Procedure Care: Monitor animal patients after procedures and provide heat support as needed.
  • Maintain Kennel and Cages: Ensure all cages and kennels are clean and well-maintained.
  • Administer Medications: Administer oral and topical medications to animals as prescribed by veterinarians.
  • Collect Samples: Assist in collecting samples such as feces or urine for testing.
  • Monitor Animal Status: Pay close attention to pets' status and promptly notify technicians and veterinarians when a pet needs medical attention.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of animal care and treatment.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; certification or associate's degree in veterinary technology or animal science a plus.
  • Experience: One year of previous experience in animal care or in a clinic setting.
  • Skills: Basic understanding of animal behavior and health care, ability to multitask and prioritize, excellent communication skills, and attention to detail.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to restrain larger pets when necessary and work in a fast-paced environment.
