Kennel Assistant Job Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Kennel Assistant to join our team at Dix Hills Animal Hospital. The ideal candidate will have a passion for caring for animals and excellent customer-service skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Care for hospitalized and boarded animals by bathing, feeding, watering, and exercising
  • Sanitize examining rooms and surface areas
  • Assist in holding and restraining animals during exams
  • Assist vet and vet technicians with non-surgical procedures
  • Provide care for animals after procedures by monitoring vitals and providing heat support
  • Change animal bedding and kennel materials
  • Ensure all cages and kennels are clean
  • Administer oral and topical medications
  • Assist in collecting samples such as feces or urine for testing
  • Promptly notify technicians and veterinarians when a pet needs medical attention
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Certification a plus; Associate's degree or course credit in veterinary technology or animal science from an American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited program a plus
  • One (1) year previous experience in animal care or in a clinic
  • Able to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
  • Basic understanding of animal behavior and health care
  • Passion for working with animals and their owners
  • Interpersonal communication skills to communicate with owners and other veterinary staff
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous different patient needs at one time
  • Attention to detail in order to maintain accurate patient records
  • Physical ability to restrain larger pets when necessary
