Company Profile

Nomad Global Communications Solutions is a premier provider of communication and response products catering to a diverse clientele. Our mission is to deliver solutions when every second counts. We are looking for a motivated individual who is eager to learn and demonstrates exceptional customer service while making a positive impact on our team.

Position Summary

The HVAC Design Engineer plays a crucial role in the specification and creation of innovative designs for mobile and modular HVAC systems. This position entails making assumptions, performing calculations, and developing system designs, including the specification, design, and selection of sub-components. A successful candidate will demonstrate adaptability and creativity in addressing the unique design challenges faced by Nomad's industry and clientele. All work produced by the HVAC Design Engineer must adhere to Nomad GCS's standards of excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and specify Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) solutions that comply with relevant industry standards (NFPA, ANSI, ASHRAE, etc.) for mobile and modular telecommunication command centers.
  • Conduct thermal load, occupancy, cycle, and power calculations based on client specifications and internal build standards, utilizing both hand calculations and computer simulations.
  • Select system-wide or sub-component components from commercially available options (e.g., coils, compressors).
  • Develop mechanical designs for air-handling systems in challenging mounting locations using 3D SolidWorks.
  • Validate designs through prototype testing, including new systems and technologies.
  • Create designs powered by AC or DC electrical systems, accommodating refrigerants such as R134a or R410a in capacities ranging from 1-ton to over 10 tons, ensuring durability in harsh thermal, vibratory, and corrosive environments.
  • Produce comprehensive 3D models for each system, including top-level assemblies, sub-assemblies, and parts, ensuring:
    • All assigned properties are ready for analysis.
    • Complete and accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs).
    • Manufacturing-ready drawings that prioritize efficiency and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with engineers within the department to resolve discrepancies between electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and client requirements.
  • Develop, implement, oversee, and document tests to ensure designs meet customer specifications.
  • Complete all necessary documentation and drawings for production within agreed timelines.
  • Engage with engineers, designers, project management, and production leads to identify and implement improvement opportunities at both project and company levels.
  • Communicate with vendors and clients to troubleshoot designs, gather information on new designs, and obtain specifications/drawings/models of components.
  • Maintain accurate records of work hours for each project on a daily basis.
  • Exhibit a strong understanding of Nomad's Core Values and demonstrate a commitment to applying them.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Familiarity with HVAC industry codes and technologies, thermal loading, electrical loading, sheet metal design, and fluid dynamics.
  • Understanding of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including the application of principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment in the design and production of various goods and services.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes (welding, machining, grinding/cutting), quality control, costs, and techniques for optimizing the manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD), preferably SolidWorks.
  • Experience in engineering designs utilizing sheet metal, weldments, and simulations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to use hands and arms for handling, reaching, or operating tools and controls.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Required to work alongside production on the manufacturing floor, involving walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color differentiation.
Work Environment
  • Typically an indoor office setting with long periods of computer-related tasks, frequent interruptions, and occasional high-stress levels.
  • All team members must wear provided OSHA-approved eye protection in manufacturing areas.
  • Employees are expected to maintain a professional image and demeanor while on company property or representing the company off-site.
Qualifications & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; AS, AAS, or BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of verifiable experience in HVAC design, with a preference for experience in HVAC engineering within a custom manufacturing environment.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates proficiency in the responsibilities listed may be considered.
  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks or similar) and file management is desired.
  • Professional Engineer's Licensure is not required but is advantageous.
