Radiation Safety Technician

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Radiation Safety Technician to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. The successful candidate will assist the Radiation Safety Officer in the development and implementation of radiological safety programs to ensure the safe and efficacious use of radiation sources in research, medical diagnosis, therapy, and education.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct radiation protection surveys in research laboratories and clinic areas to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations and University policies.
  • Monitor inpatients who have received therapeutic administrations of radioactive material and prepare nursing dosimeters, determine visitor restrictions, and prepare contamination control in patient rooms.
  • Perform close-out surveys of labs no longer using radioactive material and survey equipment being repaired, transported, or disposed of for contamination.
  • Prepare and package shipments of radioactive material following DOT regulations.
  • Maintain air sampling equipment, collect samples, and prepare data for evaluation.
  • Assist in record keeping for personnel monitoring and bioassay program and perform bioassay measurements for staff members.
  • Maintain records of laboratory areas where radioactive materials are used, what material is ordered, how much is used, and disposal of radioactive material.
  • Provide coverage to the University for emergencies involving radioactive material and investigate radiation accidents and radioactive contamination.
  • Perform leak tests of sealed sources and assist with delivery, pickup, scanning, and shipment of radiation badges.
  • Assist with the radioactive waste disposal program and maintain records.
  • Instruct University faculty, staff, and students in radiation safety and respond to spills or accidents involving radioactive material in the lab or clinic.
Requirements:
  • Associate Degree, preferably in Physics or Biology, or high school diploma with two to four years of related work experience in a radiation safety program for a broad scope radioactive materials license for a medical institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices in the field of radiation safety/health physics.
  • Highly motivated, self-starter, effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, able to work under stress, and willing to learn and apply knowledge.
