Position Overview

Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization committed to fostering a global volunteer movement that cultivates opportunities for meaningful friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

As the world's largest organization focused on eliminating the social, physical, and economic isolation of the 200 million individuals with IDD, Best Buddies empowers these individuals by facilitating the formation of genuine friendships, securing fulfilling employment, promoting independent living, and enhancing essential skills such as public speaking, self-advocacy, and communication.

Role: Community Engagement Intern

Department: State Operations and Programs

Supervisor: Lead Program Manager

Direct Reports: None

Compensation: Unpaid, 10-15 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

The Community Engagement Intern will collaborate with the Best Buddies Delaware Program Manager to actively involve volunteers and the community in the mission of Best Buddies, particularly focusing on the Friendship and Leadership pillars. This role will support the planning and execution of training sessions and events, assist in expanding programs to new educational institutions, and manage the Citizens program in new communities.

Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in college or possess 2 years of experience in nonprofit or a related field
  • Comfortable interacting with individuals with IDD
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with major social media platforms
  • Basic project management and time management skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and a results-driven mindset
  • Able to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Comfortable working with both youth and adults
  • Available to commit 10-15 hours per week during standard business hours
  • Willing to participate in in-person training and meetings
Primary DutiesPrograms
  • Assist in the planning and execution of events, including social gatherings for the Adult Citizens Program
  • Support the management of the state friendship program database
  • Help in organizing the Fall semester events calendar and preparation materials
  • Contribute to the enhancement of expansion materials
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to onboard new Citizens Participants, including conducting interviews and matching participants
  • Assist in recruiting new schools
  • Support the planning of community events and engagements for participants
Development
  • Assist participants with fundraising initiatives during the Gala season
