Safe Routes to Schools Initiative Specialist

The Safe Routes to Schools Associate Extension Educator is a part-time position that focuses on providing support for Safe Routes to Schools initiatives by developing and implementing strategies for safe transportation to and from school. This role works to increase awareness and support for active transportation options at the county level.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement strategies to promote walking, biking, and other active transportation modes among students and families.
- Coordinate and collaborate with schools to conduct walkability and bikeability assessments of routes to identify safety concerns and improvement opportunities.
- Provide guidance and support to schools in developing Safe Routes to School plans and policies based on assessment findings.
- Organize and lead educational events, workshops, and outreach activities to raise awareness about safe routes to schools.
- Collaborate with local transportation authorities and city planners to advocate for infrastructure improvements, such as crosswalks, sidewalks, bike lanes, and traffic calming measures.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community stakeholders, including PTAs, neighborhood associations, law enforcement agencies, and health organizations.
- Collect and analyze data on student transportation habits, safety incidents, and program effectiveness.
- Prepare reports and presentations to communicate program outcomes and impact to stakeholders and the public.
- Assist in grant writing, fundraising, and budget management to sustain and expand Safe Routes to School initiatives.
- Stay informed about relevant local, state, and federal transportation policies, regulations, and funding opportunities.
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning, transportation management, public health, education, or a related field.
- Knowledge of principles and best practices related to Safe Routes to School programs, traffic safety, active transportation, and land use planning.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and with others in a team with minimum supervision, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.
- Capable of managing multiple tasks, and meeting deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and data analysis tools.
- Access to reliable transportation for travel to schools and community sites.
- Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including encounters with varying personalities.
- Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information/records according to state requirements.
- Ability to regularly work extended hours, occasionally work weekend and/or evening hours, and occasionally travel out of town for meetings and training, sometimes overnight.
- Working knowledge of and ability to apply department policies and procedures, and applicable Purdue University guidelines.
- Ability to comply with all employer/department personnel policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for events and meetings as needed.
- Valid U.S. or Canadian driver's License and demonstrated safe driving record.
- Experience working with schools, community organizations, or government agencies on transportation, safety, or health initiatives.
- Experience working with low-resourced, minoritized, and marginalized populations.
