An Advanced Practice Provider with UNC Health Care delivers high-quality, cost-effective care in collaboration with a supervising physician, reflecting the organization's mission and complying with policies and regulations.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Obtains health and medical history, performs physical assessment, and interprets diagnostic tests.
  • Develops and implements treatment plans, prescribes evidence-based pharmacological agents, and schedules follow-up management.
  • Conducts preventive health screening, maintains patient records, and stays up-to-date with general disease and pathologic processes.
  • Derives correct diagnoses through synthesis of clinical data and proper selection and interpretation of diagnostic studies.

Education and Professional Development

  • Professionally educates patients and/or families regarding medical conditions, treatment, and follow-up.
  • Collaborates with clinicians, staff, and students to promote continuity and patient-centered care.
  • Develops educational materials and provides instruction to physicians, house staff, nursing, ancillaries, and/or students.

Leadership and Community Outreach

  • Provides instruction and precepts physicians, house staff, nursing, ancillaries, and/or students.
  • Develops and leads community/network outreach programs.
  • Leads/participates in systems improvements and demonstrates an understanding of healthcare contexts and systems.

Quality and Research

  • Engages in daily continuous quality improvement by identifying and implementing processes for improvement.
  • Leads interdisciplinary teams to provide integrated delivery of patient care services.
  • Initiates and revises protocols or guidelines to reflect evidence-based changes in care management.

Requirements include an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider program, licensure as an Advanced Practice Provider in North Carolina, and board certification if required.
