The Senior Battery Technology Engineer will leverage extensive knowledge in battery systems to spearhead research, development, and evaluation initiatives centered on both current and prospective Nickel-Zinc battery technologies. The ideal candidate will collaborate with a skilled Cross Functional Team (CFT) to innovate new products, conduct Root Cause/Corrective Actions (RCCAs) on battery issues, suggest novel battery applications, and oversee proof-of-concept evaluations, engaging in all stages of the Product Life Cycle Management (PLM) process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct the Battery Engineering team and oversee technical staff
  • Establish technical guidance and performance benchmarks for the team
  • Act as an electrochemistry and battery authority to assist the CFT
  • Employ expertise in electrochemistry to inform new Ni/Zn-based product and Battery Management System (BMS) designs
  • Oversee battery evaluations, including performance, degradation, and state-of-health assessments, as well as accelerated life and abuse testing
  • Create testing strategies and protocols pertinent to fundamental Ni/Zn battery technology advancements
  • Utilize rational, design-of-experiment (DOE) methodologies to enhance cell, pack, and overall system design
  • Conduct and supervise battery evaluations, including autopsies of malfunctioning batteries, and communicate findings and recommendations
  • Guide compliance teams and Nationally Recognized Testing Labs (NRTLs) to secure product-specific safety certifications
  • Collaborate directly with clients and internal sales & marketing teams to develop innovative products for established markets
  • Implement appropriate DFx (Design for Manufacturability, Design for Assembly, and Design for Cost) tools to direct development projects
  • Assist the Applications Engineering team, particularly in evaluating and screening new concepts, applications, and opportunities
  • Contribute to cost-reduction and continuous improvement efforts
  • Support the expansion of intellectual property and patent portfolios
  • Effectively communicate plans and outcomes
  • Collaborate, train, and work alongside other battery engineers, scientists, and technicians
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal and external project stakeholders
  • Stay informed on relevant industry trends, applications, and materials technology through literature, seminars, and market engagement
  • Adhere to safe working practices in environments involving high voltage, chemical, and electrochemical testing systems

Qualifications:

  • Education: BS, MS, or PhD in materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline
  • 12+ years of substantial, hands-on experience in battery technology development, product innovation, characterization, and/or testing
  • Strong leadership, project management, time management, and communication capabilities
  • Solid foundation in electrochemical principles
  • Expertise in battery characterization methodologies
  • Proven ability to design and execute complex experiments
  • Familiarity with DOE techniques for performance enhancement
  • Experience in implementing RCCA practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree focused on electrochemistry or battery technology
  • Practical experience with Nickel, Zinc, and/or alkaline-based battery technologies
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis techniques and proficiency in JMP software or similar tools
  • Experience with materials characterization methods
  • Relevant experience in product or industry-specific areas such as battery backup systems or uninterruptible power supplies

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

  • Position involves sitting, walking, and lifting up to 40 pounds
  • Willingness to work with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for high voltage safety
  • Domestic and international travel may be required
  • Requires close visual acuity, color differentiation, and auditory capabilities
  • Work may be conducted in warehouse, laboratory, and office settings

Compensation will be determined based on factors including location, level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience, and comparison to existing employees in this role.
