Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant I to join our Gastroenterology team at Mount Sinai Hospital. As a Medical Assistant I, you will provide clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, and perform patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical support to physicians and surgeons, including preparing patients for exams and procedures, taking vital signs, and assisting with patient care.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as scheduling appointments, updating patient records, and communicating with patients and families.
  • Assist with patient flow, including checking schedules and organizing patient flow, and accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms.
  • Perform phlebotomy duties, including collecting and processing specimens, and preparing for exams and procedures.
  • Assist with clerical responsibilities, including sending and receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x-ray reports, and completing forms and requisitions.
  • Enter orders into the electronic medical record (EMR) system or prepare prescription refill requests on behalf of the physician for review and approval.
  • Inventory, order, or re-stock medical supplies as applicable.
  • Provide set-up of examination rooms and instruments in accordance with proper sterilization techniques established by hospital and infection control policies.
  • Maintain logging systems as required for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, sterilization process, crash cart, point of care testing, or others as needed.
  • Check expiration dates on all medications and medical supplies, and dispose of them appropriately as per institution policy.
  • Assist in the maintenance of medical charts, including filing, op reports, test results, and home care forms.
  • May schedule surgeries/procedures or work in conjunction with the Surgical Coordinator to verify times with patients, prepare charts, pre-admissions, and consent forms as necessary.
  • May perform appointment scheduling and registration for patients, as well as updating patient demographic and insurance information.
  • May check and verify insurance information using internal or web sources.
  • May perform and verify pre-certification for procedures as necessary.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certificate program from an approved school or equivalent training and experience; preferred 2 years of Medical Assistant experience without the certificate program.
  • Certified as Medical Assistant preferred.
