Job Overview
The Cardiovascular Technologist in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab employs specialized expertise to deliver clinical assistance and guidance for both diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular operations. This role supports the procedural team, either by scrubbing alongside the physician or by monitoring and documenting the case. It is essential to maintain proficiency in all responsibilities, utilizing evidence-based practices and research aligned with the scope of practice for Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialists or Radiologic Technologists. The technologist effectively performs procedures during callback situations and exercises sound judgment while utilizing available resources.Key Responsibilities
- Patient Evaluation: Collects essential records for procedures, including medical history, lab results, and medication documentation. Anticipates changes and adjusts care to meet patient needs. Conducts direct patient assessments within the scope of practice, including evaluating medical and surgical history, ASA classification, NPO status, relevant labs, and sedation plans. Notifies the procedural team of any missing information and documents findings while incorporating patient preferences and concerns. Adheres to infection control protocols for all patients. 10%
- Circulating Duties: May circulate during procedures, excluding medication administration, while ensuring a safe working environment. Familiar with the location and operation of emergency equipment and completes annual departmental competencies. Performs procedures as ordered by the physician and operates necessary hospital equipment while maintaining proper body mechanics. Responds promptly to life-threatening emergencies and adheres to radiation safety guidelines. Ensures proper handling and labeling of specimens and performs point-of-care testing. 10%
- Communication: Engages effectively with hospital staff, medical personnel, patients, families, and external resources through verbal and written communication. Functions as a collaborative team member, displaying a positive image of the department. Utilizes SBAR communication tools and maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Reports errors or incidents to the appropriate personnel and documents them accurately. Keeps the physician informed of all relevant patient information. 5%
- Emergency Coverage: Provides 24-hour coverage for any emergent cardiac procedures, ensuring response within a 30-minute window for STEMI cases. 5%
- Patient Education: Ensures patients understand and consent to the procedures performed. Provides education to enhance patient and family knowledge, explaining timeframes and processes thoroughly. Acts as a resource for other staff members and maintains BLS/ACLS certification. Participates in departmental meetings and assumes responsibility for personal continuing education. 10%
- Organizational Skills: Demonstrates effective organizational abilities by managing time, equipment, and resources efficiently. If in a charge role, establishes daily procedure schedules based on patient and physician priorities. Identifies and resolves problems proactively while keeping all parties informed of any scheduling delays. 15%
- Equipment Management: Responsible for the proper care and cleaning of patient equipment and supplies within the department. Ensures that all equipment is maintained and stocked appropriately for smooth operations. Reports any issues with equipment to the supervisor and ensures safe, functional equipment is available. 15%
- Scrub Role: Possesses knowledge of angiographic examinations, interventional cardiology procedures, and the use of contrast agents. Familiar with the operation of radiographic equipment and radiation safety protocols. Prepares the procedure room and assesses the patient's condition, practicing proper sterile techniques. Responds appropriately to emergency situations and demonstrates proper techniques for managing arterial sheaths. 15%
- Hemodynamic Monitoring: Responsible for accurate and timely documentation of case events, interpreting and managing hemodynamic monitoring. Anticipates potential issues and demonstrates clinical assessment and intervention, notifying the physician and team of any changes in hemodynamics. Ensures accurate documentation of ACC data fields and charging of procedures. 15%
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities
This position does not involve management responsibilities and reports to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Graduate of a certificate or degree program in a health science field such as cardiovascular technology, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, or paramedicine.
- Credentials: Current credentials with ARRT for Radiologic Technologist or RCIS for CVT, RRT, or Paramedic.
- Experience: Previous experience in a Cardiac Catheterization Lab is preferred but not required.

- Current Prisma Health team members in the role of CV Technologist as of the specified date are exempt from the educational requirements noted above.
Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses
- ARRT for Radiology if a graduate of an accredited Radiology program; OR RCIS for Invasive CV Technology.
- SCRQSA License.
- BLS and ACLS certifications.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Competency in arrhythmia management.
- ARRT (CV), RCIS, or previous CCL experience preferred.
- Familiarity with Epic Cupid or Radiant preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
