The Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing essential tasks related to the upkeep of public spaces, including mowing and trimming around municipal buildings and public rights-of-way. This role demands a strong understanding of various manual and powered tools, equipment, and machinery. Workers may encounter challenging environmental conditions such as dust, rain, and pollen, as well as extreme weather.
Reporting Structure:
- The Grounds Maintenance Worker primarily reports to the Grounds Crew Leader, while also receiving guidance from other Crew Leaders and supervisory staff.
- This position does not involve supervising other employees.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform essential tasks such as mowing and trimming on public property using both manual and powered equipment, including mowers and weed eaters.
- Maintain and care for tools and equipment used in daily operations.
- Adhere to organizational policies and follow the directives of supervisors.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors to ensure smooth operations and address any issues that arise.
- Exhibit good judgment and decision-making skills in job-related matters.
- Provide assistance to team members and demonstrate a cooperative attitude in all interactions.
- Report any concerns or issues to the appropriate supervisor in a timely manner.
- Maintain punctuality and regular attendance at the workplace.
- Be available for on-call duties and work outside of standard hours when necessary.
- Show initiative and diligence in completing all assigned tasks.
- Safeguard municipal property and report any required repairs.
- Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Uphold confidentiality regarding all municipal business.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Class C Driver License with a satisfactory driving record.
Successful completion of pre-employment background checks and medical evaluations is mandatory.
Required Skills and Abilities:
The Grounds Maintenance Worker must meet the following physical and mental requirements:
- Ability to work safely and follow both oral and written instructions.
- Proficiency in using janitorial equipment and supplies.
- Capability to perform physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to learn and retain job-related information.
- Engagement in repetitive physical activities, such as operating a weed eater or pushing a lawnmower.
- Skill in using hand tools and minor repair of small equipment.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Physical capability to lift and move objects weighing at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to maintain balance and perform various physical movements.
- Effective communication skills in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Capability to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability to drive vehicles safely.
- Willingness to work extended hours as needed.
- Ability to respond to emergencies or unusual conditions as required.
Physical and Mental Demands:
The Worker must be able to:
- Engage in strenuous physical activities such as lifting and digging.
- Maintain physical balance and perform tasks unassisted.
- Work effectively in various outdoor conditions.
- Lift and carry heavy objects as needed.
