Job Title: Maintenance Mechanic III

Job Summary:

This role is responsible for supporting production by safely maintaining equipment to produce high-quality products. The successful candidate will diagnose and repair simple and complex manufacturing equipment issues, perform routine maintenance tasks, and ensure compliance with safety guidelines and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follow good manufacturing practices, personal protective equipment requirements, and safety guidelines.
  • Perform basic mechanical adjustments, such as tensioning drive belts, conveyor belts, tracking belts, and chains.
  • Work safely around moving equipment and conveyors in a wet environment.
  • Be proficient in the use of standard hand tools, such as wrenches, hammers, bearing pullers, etc.
  • Perform building mechanical repairs, such as overhead door track and panel replacement, concrete work, and chain link repairs.
  • Change motors, pulleys, gearboxes, and belting, and perform basic welding skills.
  • Perform simple plumbing repairs, such as unclogging drains, replacing faucets, and toilet repairs.
  • Troubleshoot simple mechanical systems, such as chain drives and pumps.
  • Replace slicer, cutter, dicer blade assemblies, and perform necessary adjustments.
  • Read piping diagrams and identify the function of various components for air and water distribution systems.
  • Perform scheduled and emergency repairs on all equipment and building structures (e.g., pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, electrical, plumbing).
  • General knowledge of packaging production equipment (scales/baggers) and ability to PM this equipment on own.
  • Read and complete work orders, paperwork, specification books, schematics, and manuals.
  • Read and rebuild pneumatic hoists, gearboxes, power drives, centrifugal pumps, and replace mechanical shaft seals.
  • Install production equipment on elevated platforms.
  • Service and replace pressure and prox switches and photo eyes.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems and program at a basic level the automated equipment such as automated scales and packaging machines.
  • Troubleshoot systems up to 480 volts with complicated electrical controls and wire 3-phase motors.
  • Program Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and read electrical schematics and identify components.
  • Program simple production equipment such as metal detectors and spin dryers.
  • Handle blade housing.
  • Lock out/Tag out equipment as necessary.
  • Safely operate shop equipment such as grinders, cut-off saws, power tools, ladders, etc.
  • Comply with SQF Regulatory Programs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Willingness and flexibility to work in a cold environment.
  • Reading, Writing, Speaking English Preferred.
  • Knowledge of GMPs & Safety Guidelines.
  • Forklift and scissors lift safety.
  • Use of fire extinguishers.
  • OSHA, FDA, and GMP requirements.
  • Cleaning and degreasing techniques.
  • 24 volts to 480 volt electrical safety practices.
  • Chain drive sprocket and gearbox ratios.
  • Understand efficiencies and downtime.
  • Equipment moving and installation.
  • Hot-work permit requirements.
  • Electrical testing equipment/tools.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, be cross-trained, and multitask in multiple positions.
  • 2-3 years of experience and basic mechanical skills.
  • GED/High School Diploma Preferred.

Physical Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the position entails use of ladders and catwalks to reach production equipment, regularly works near moving mechanical parts, and is regularly exposed to extreme cold for extended periods of time. The associate frequently works in high, precarious places. The associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
