LB&B Associates Inc. is engaged in providing Contractor Instructional Services for the U.S. Navy's Navigational Seamanship Ship-Handling Training (NSST).
We are seeking dedicated full-time Instructors to support the establishment of the Mariner Skills Training Center. Compensation will be based on experience, certifications, and established Collective Bargaining Agreements.
While travel may be necessary for initial training, it is not expected to exceed five weeks.
Instructors will be responsible for delivering training to U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officers and Enlisted Watch Standers participating in various navigation, seamanship, and ship handling courses. Additionally, they will contribute to curriculum development as directed by the Surface Warfare Officer School for new instructional courses aimed at Junior Officers of the Deck (Underway) and Officers of the Deck (Underway). Training will encompass both classroom and simulator instruction. Candidates must possess strong computer skills and the ability to quickly learn advanced maritime simulator software and tools.
Instructor Qualifications and Certifications
- Extensive practical knowledge and experience as a former qualified Navy Surface Warfare Officer (or equivalent) is highly desirable. Qualification as Officer of the Deck on at least two Surface Combatants is preferred. Additional valuable experience includes at least two Division Officer tours, or serving as Officer in Charge of a Military Sealift Command (MSC) Detachment, or as a Tug Boat Captain, or holding a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license, with significant sea service as a Second or First Mate on a merchant marine vessel, demonstrating knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and shiphandling principles.
- In-depth understanding of Navigation, Shiphandling, and Seamanship, including but not limited to: (1) Shipboard Navigation Department Organization, (2) Weather, (3) Nautical Charts, (4) MOBOARDS, (5) Visual Navigational Aids, (6) Law of the Sea, (7) Voyage Management System, (8) ARPA/Radar, (9) Tides and Currents, (10) Underway Replenishment, (11) Anchoring, (12) Duties of Underway Officer of the Deck, (13) Operational Risk Management, (14) Shiphandling Fundamentals, (15) Officer of the Deck Math.
- Thorough knowledge of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs) and its applications for teaching surface warfare officers about international and inland navigation rules. Key areas of emphasis include: (1) Lights, flags, and sound signals; (2) Head-on, overtaking, and crossing situations; (3) Sail, power, and towing vessels; (4) General prudential rule; and (5) Buoys and channel markers.
- Completion of a VMS Operator Course or an approved equivalent.
- Practical knowledge of adult learning principles, methods, and practices in one or more specialty areas, such as occupational analysis, instructional product development, instructional materials development, and educational evaluation. Proven ability to apply this knowledge in developing innovative program activities where traditional techniques may not be effective.
- Demonstrated experience in Navy Training Course Management, including curriculum development, revisions of existing courses, course master schedules, and student management.
- Experience in delivering curriculum in both classroom and laboratory settings.
- Qualified OOD Phase II Instructor. Navy Surface Warfare Officer. Qualified underway OOD. USCG license. Former second or first mate on a Merchant Marine vessel with knowledge of Navigation, Seamanship, and Ship handling. Familiarity with NSS subjects, COLREGs, etc. Completion of VMS Operator course of instruction. Knowledge of learning principles and effective delivery of course material in both classroom and simulator environments.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
