Maritime Instructor

LB&B Associates Inc. is seeking a highly qualified Maritime Instructor - Mid-Level to support the US Navy's Navigational Seamanship Ship-Handling Training (NSST) program at the Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) in Newport, RI.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officers and Enlisted Watch Standers in various navigation, seamanship, and ship handling courses. The instructor will also participate in curriculum development and revisions of existing courses, as well as student management and evaluation.

• Develop and deliver high-quality instructional materials and courses in navigation, seamanship, and ship handling principles
• Teach U.S. Navy Surface Warfare Officers and Enlisted Watch Standers in a classroom and laboratory setting
• Participate in curriculum development and revisions of existing courses
• Manage and evaluate student performance and progress
• Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure accuracy and relevance of instructional materials

• Comprehensive knowledge of navigation, ship handling, and seamanship principles, including shipboard navigation department organization, weather, nautical charts, MOBOARDS, visual navigational aids, law of the sea, voyage management system, ARPA/Radar, tides and currents, underway replenishment, anchoring, duties of underway officer of the deck, operational risk management, ship handling fundamentals, and officer of the deck math
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (COLREGs) and all applications for teaching surface warfare officers international and inland navigation rules of the road
• Completed A-061-0042 VMS Operator Course or A-061-0044 VMS 9 Operator or approved equivalent
• Practical knowledge of adult learning principles, practices, methods of one or more specialty areas, e.g., occupational analysis; instructional product development; instructional materials development; tests and measurement generation and analysis; education evaluation and computer technology application
• Proven experience in delivering curriculum in both a classroom and laboratory setting
• Must be able to hold and maintain a secret security clearance

• Comprehensive practical knowledge, skill, and ability as a former qualified Navy Surface Warfare Officer (or equivalent)
• Qualified as Officer of the Deck on at least two Surface Combatants
• Additional valuable experience includes at least two Division Officer tours, or Officer in Charge of a Military Sealift Command (MSC) Detachment, or Tug Boat Captain, or U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license, at sea service, as a Second or First Mate on a merchant marine vessel with significant knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and ship handling principles outlined in the Navigation, Seamanship, Shiphandling Training Requirements Document (NSS TRD)

The successful candidate will work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, collaborating with subject matter experts and other instructors to deliver high-quality training to U.S. Navy personnel. The work environment will be primarily classroom and laboratory-based, with occasional travel required to support initial training away from home port.
