Job Title: Principal Planner

Join the State of Minnesota in shaping the future of our state through long-range planning and policy development.

About the Role

We are seeking highly skilled and experienced Principal Planners to lead the development of statewide long-range plans on high-priority issues impacting the future of Minnesota. As a Principal Planner, you will coordinate planning efforts on multiple, concurrent long-range plans, overseeing the development of technical and analytical work, and communicating with diverse groups and communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate state-wide planning efforts, overseeing the development of multiple, concurrent long-range plans.
  • Develop the vision for technical and analytical work needed to advance long-range planning efforts.
  • Coordinate and contribute to the development of products and outputs from the long-range planning process.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key individuals and groups to move long-range planning initiatives forward.
  • Provide ongoing input and feedback on the Long-Range Planning team's goals, structure, and operations.
Requirements
  • Four years of professional-level experience.
  • A Bachelor's degree in public policy, public administration, urban planning, engineering, geography, economics, environmental sciences, journalism, or a related field may substitute for one year of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of the following areas of planning: long-range planning, comprehensive planning, community-based planning, strategic planning, land use planning, environmental planning, economic development, urban design, policy planning, and/or other areas of planning and policy.
  • Demonstrated project and stakeholder management experience, including the ability to organize and execute work based on project goals, prioritize amidst competing interests, and effectively engage a variety of stakeholders to advance the work.
  • Experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through professional work.
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree or certificate in urban planning, public policy, public administration, economics, geography, environmental sciences, journalism, law, engineering, or a related field.
  • Lived experience relevant for the work of long-range planning on key policy issues to improve the lives of Minnesotans.
  • Experience with public sector organizations, including policy development and program implementation.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota's legislative process, state policies, procedures, and practices, and research institution landscape.
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies, including leading self, leading others, leading the organization, and leading outside the organization.
What We Offer

The State of Minnesota offers a competitive salary range of $54.60/hour to $114,004/year, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement savings, and paid time off.
