San Francisco, California, United States Ammobia Full time
Principal Process Engineer

About Ammobia
Ammobia is dedicated to transforming the ammonia sector. As a pioneering startup, we are innovating the Haber Bosch 2.0 process, which facilitates efficient and sustainable ammonia production. Traditionally, ammonia manufacturing has been a significant source of pollution, characterized by a rigid and slow-moving approach. Our focus is on creating dynamic processes and innovative plant designs that harness intermittent renewable energy sources for ammonia production. Clean ammonia is poised to play a crucial role in our decarbonized future, addressing challenging sectors such as chemicals, fertilizers, and heavy-duty transportation. We are backed by prominent climate technology organizations including Starlight Ventures, Collaborative Fund, Third Derivative, and Forbes 30 Under 30.

Job Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Process Engineer to spearhead the design, development, and enhancement of groundbreaking 'Haber Bosch 2.0' ammonia facilities. You will initiate projects from scratch and oversee them through to startup, commissioning, and operational phases, incorporating insights gained from material and process advancements.

Your role will involve collaborating with a multidisciplinary engineering team to define and model our pilot and commercial-scale operations. You will be responsible for creating comprehensive mass and energy balances, equipment specifications, and making strategic decisions on whether to build or outsource, ensuring the successful execution of your designs.

The ideal candidate will possess over 10 years of industry experience in chemical process design, modeling, and engineering, having navigated the entire lifecycle of plant design from concept through construction to operational readiness.
  • Design, develop, and refine chemical processes across all design phases (from conceptualization to commissioning).
  • Create process flow diagrams, heat and mass balances, P&IDs, control strategies, and process simulation models utilizing industry-standard software tools (such as Aspen Plus, HYSYS, or gPROMS).
  • Assemble an engineering team to support the detailed design of the pilot plant through to deployment, including internal hires, vendors, and external engineering partners.
  • Specify and procure plant components (including heat exchangers, condensers, valves, mass flow controllers) while designing processes with commercial viability in mind.
  • Develop high-fidelity technoeconomic models and project cost estimates.

Candidate Profile:
You are a detail-oriented and systems-focused chemical engineer with a passion for developing new technologies and executing projects effectively at all design stages. You thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, favoring action and clear communication, and you operate with a high degree of autonomy and responsibility.

Successful candidates should ideally possess the following:
  • 10+ years of experience in chemical process design and optimization, particularly in ammonia, specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, or related fields.
  • Extensive knowledge of process simulation tools (such as Aspen, gPROMS, or similar) and programming languages (such as Python or MATLAB).
  • Proven experience in developing Basic Engineering Packages (BEPs) and/or FEED packages for projects in chemical, specialty chemical, or fuels processing.
  • Demonstrated expertise in all phases of chemical process design, from initial concepts to design studies to commissioning and operation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong understanding of process safety, including the ability to conduct hazard analyses, implement safety measures, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in developing pilot or first-of-a-kind plants for innovative technologies, particularly in advancing FOAK technologies through FID and pilot operations.
  • Expertise in dynamic modeling of chemical processes.
  • Subject matter expertise in thermochemical reactors, heat exchangers, compressors, gas-gas separations, or related fields.

About Us:
We are a dedicated team of scientists and engineers who value collaboration, accountability, rigorous discussion, and rapid iteration. We prioritize career development, mutual feedback, and an engaging work environment. Explore our full values statement to learn more about our culture.
