The role of a Crisis Intervention Specialist involves working within a hospital-based crisis environment as part of the Utah Statewide crisis response framework. This position is responsible for evaluating individuals in crisis, facilitating appropriate stabilization measures, and making necessary referrals. The Crisis Worker will engage in screening, triage, and psycho-social support while connecting individuals to vital resources. Collaboration with local mental health authorities across Utah is also a key component of this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish a rapid, non-judgmental rapport with individuals in crisis, ensuring a respectful and understanding interaction.
  • Utilize open-ended inquiries to accurately identify and define the issues at hand.
  • Employ targeted questions to assess the safety of the individual, including inquiries related to suicidal ideation.
  • Evaluate life-threatening scenarios, including potential risks of self-harm or harm to others, and determine the need for medical intervention.
  • Efficiently mobilize community resources to address immediate threats and develop safety plans.
  • Maintain thorough documentation and adhere to policy guidelines, ensuring that notes are recorded in a timely manner for continuity of care.
  • Engage in a consultative process to determine appropriate actions based on situational assessments.

Essential Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient typing skills, with a minimum speed of 30 WPM.
  • Exceptional customer service abilities, demonstrating a commitment to meeting client needs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competence in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and productivity in high-pressure situations.
  • Effective prioritization and multitasking capabilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Awareness and sensitivity towards diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with basic suicidology, including assessment of desire, intent, and capability.
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies that prioritize safety and prevention.
  • Understanding of the criteria and procedures for voluntary and involuntary hospitalization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Candidates must be eligible for State Crisis Worker Certification within one year through one of the following:

  • Licensed health or behavioral health professionals in Utah.
  • Individuals with a bachelor's degree in a human services field.
  • Certified Peer Support Specialists with at least one year of experience.
  • Certified Case Managers with a minimum of one year of experience.
  • Certified Family Resource Facilitators with at least one year of experience.

Licenses:

  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in customer service.
