Key Responsibilities:
- Engage in the delivery of patient care effectively. Under close supervision, perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, and simple color vision tests, and may conduct refraction. Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note any deviations from normal. May administer dilation or anesthetic drops. May assist with patient contact lens insertion and removal training.
- Carry out stocking and maintenance duties. Ensure the physical environment of examination and procedure rooms is maintained. Clean and stock rooms daily and keep an adequate supply of sample drug medications as required. Assist with ordering medical and office supplies. Prepare contaminated instruments and equipment for sterilization. Facilitate calibration, maintenance, and monitoring of equipment as necessary.
- Perform various clerical functions. Assist with appointment scheduling and telephone call screening activities.
- Answer phones, take messages, and relay them to the appropriate individuals. Under the direction of the physician, may contact pharmacies for prescription refills and document prescriptions in patient charts. File test results, forms, and letters into medical records.
- Exhibit a positive, concerned, and sensitive response in the workplace. Interact with patients, visitors, and all personnel courteously. Resolve conflicts in a healthy and constructive manner. Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and co-worker information; demonstrate respect for individual, cultural, and social differences. Contribute to a positive work environment.
- Engage in personal professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs, and seeking appropriate assistance or educational opportunities. Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
- Work requires an educational background generally equivalent to a high school education.
- Preferred: certification as a certified Ophthalmic Assistant or Ophthalmic Technician
- Must possess BLS Certification
