Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing science education services to middle school students in a classroom and laboratory setting. Student achievement and growth are primarily dependent on the work and efforts of the classroom teacher. The position is demanding, varied and complex and yet as the classroom teacher you must be well trained in science content knowledge and teaching strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Deliver Instruction and Content Standards: Effectively deliver instruction and content standards as identified by the State of Michigan and the district to help students meet and/or exceed minimum proficiency standards.
  2. Science Content Knowledge: Possess a working knowledge of the new Michigan Science standards.
  3. Curriculum Development: Work to further develop the science curriculum and seek innovative, engaging and motivating instructional approaches.
  4. Student Needs Assessment: Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interest and abilities of students.
  5. Instructional Materials: Assists in the selection of books, equipment, lab supplies and other instructional materials.
  6. Assessment and Evaluation: Prepares and administers subject/topical specific tests and labs to measure student abilities and progress.
  7. Student Progress Monitoring: Conducts appropriate assessments of students' work and maintain accurate and regular data on students in areas of attendance, grades and IEP progress if applicable.
  8. Student Engagement: Focus on making learning visible through effective student engagement.
  9. Communication: Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning the academic and behavioral progress of their students through conferences, written messages, telephone calls and or e-mails.
  10. Instructional Techniques: Uses a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  11. Student Safety: Takes all responsible precautions to provide for the health and safety of the students and to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
  12. Student Progress Reporting: Monitor, assess and report student progress toward learning target goals.
  13. Communication with Stakeholders: Frequently communicate with students, parents, counselors and administrators regarding student progress and other matters.
  14. Instructional Design: Design and implement appropriate instruction of assigned subjects in accordance with students' needs, district curriculum, and state standards.
  15. Student Support: Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and emotional problems.
  16. State Testing: Administers state testing in accordance with the District testing practices.
  17. Staff and Student Activities: Participates in staff committees and sponsorships of student activities.
  18. Student Supervision: Supervise students in the hallways before, after and between classes, and special events.
Qualifications
  • Michigan Teacher Certification: Hold current Michigan teacher certification, with strong preference for those qualified / certified to teach Science for grades 6-8 with DI or DX endorsement preferred.
  • Michigan State Standards: Extensive knowledge of Michigan's State Standards.
  • Middle School Student Understanding: Understanding of the unique aspects of teaching and supporting middle school student.
  • Candidate Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate the following:
    • Exceptional Instructional Skills: Exceptional skill in planning, delivering and assessing student learning.
    • Assessment Strategies: Effective use of balanced assessments (formative and summative).
    • Research-Based Instruction: Exceptional knowledge in research based instructional strategies, data, and systems of MTSS, and ability to implement them effectively.
    • Differentiated Instruction: Effective practices for working with students of all ability levels, including differentiated instruction.
    • Technology Integration: Ability to integrate technology appropriately to support instruction.
    • Professional Conduct: Ability to maintain high standards of professional conduct at all times.
    • Collaboration: Commitment to working collaboratively with a focus on student learning.
    • Attendance and Work Ethic: Punctuality, good attendance and strong work ethics in all areas.
    • Student Success: Ascribe to the philosophy that all children can succeed and demonstrates the commitment to do what is necessary to make this a reality.
