Overview of the Colorectal Surgery & Urology Unit:
This specialized unit features 22 semi-private rooms dedicated to the care of patients recovering from colorectal and urologic surgical procedures. Our nursing professionals collaborate closely with Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses to address ostomy and wound care requirements. Registered Nurses (RNs) will also provide care for post-operative patients requiring Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), nasogastric (NG) tubes, and central venous lines.

Key Procedures Performed in the Unit:
Assist with chest tube placements, central line insertions, wound vacuum changes, NG tube placements, Cortrak procedures, and management of indwelling catheters.

The Registered Professional Nurse is responsible for assessing, coordinating, planning, directing, implementing, and managing the needs of assigned patients throughout their care journey, with a strong emphasis on facilitating progress toward discharge, particularly during transitions within the acute care environment.

The Registered Professional Nurse ensures the delivery and coordination of patient care provided by the entire caregiving team.

They guarantee that competent and compassionate patient care is consistently delivered to all stakeholders, including referring facilities, hospital staff, and patients across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implementing physician orders, administering medications, initiating IV therapy, performing treatments, procedures, and special tests, and documenting care as mandated by company policy and applicable regulations.
  • Ordering, interpreting, and evaluating diagnostic tests to assess and identify patients' conditions.
  • Assessing and evaluating patient needs and responses to the care provided.
  • Applying sound nursing judgment in making patient care management decisions.
  • Providing primary and emergency care for both occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Administering over-the-counter and prescription medications as prescribed.
  • Collaborating with the nursing team to develop comprehensive Plans of Care for all patients.
  • Directing and guiding ancillary personnel while maintaining professional nursing standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program leading to a Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • Current New York State Registered Nurse license is required.
  • Certification in BLS/ACLS/PALS/TNCC must be obtained and maintained.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of clinical nursing experience in an Emergency Department, preferably within a large academic, Level 1 Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center.
  • Commitment to continuous education for professional development.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement concepts, principles, and problem-solving techniques, with the ability to apply them in support of departmental and patient care quality enhancement.
