As an Educational Guidance Counselor, your primary focus will be to support students in achieving success across academic, social, and emotional dimensions. This will be accomplished through individual and group counseling, as well as collaboration with educators, parents, and other professionals to cultivate a safe, healthy, and nurturing educational atmosphere that enhances the relationship between home and school.
‖ Key Responsibilities Include:
- Delivering individual and group counseling sessions aimed at resolving personal or familial issues that may hinder academic performance, including crisis intervention when necessary.
- Conducting interviews with students, family members, and school staff to collect information essential for evaluating students' social, emotional, and behavioral adaptation to school and community.
- Maintaining consistent communication with students' parents/guardians to update them on their child's progress, challenges, and any home life changes that could impact school performance.
- Creating and revising Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (PBIP) in compliance with organizational, educational, state, and federal guidelines.
- Participating in IEP team meetings and facilitating discussions as directed by the school district, while also engaging in other team meetings to address specific student and parent concerns.
- Working collaboratively with educational and social service professionals to establish suitable agency services for students and their families.
- Providing case management services for students, which includes coordinating parent meetings, managing emergency transportation requests, handling disciplinary actions, and liaising with external therapists.
- Partnering with teachers, parents/guardians, district personnel, and service providers to identify effective solutions for learning and behavioral challenges, while ensuring positive public relations and a favorable organizational image.
- Monitoring the implementation of positive teaching strategies by conducting monthly evaluations of classroom staff's adherence to IEP goals and PBIP.
- Offering guidance and support to teachers in developing classroom schedules, maintaining student data systems, and facilitating student transition plans to ensure appropriate curriculum and services based on each student's IEP and other relevant objectives.
- Evaluating student progress through regular reviews of classroom data collection and recording systems, providing necessary training and guidance to classroom staff to meet student needs.
- Serving as a role model for effective teaching practices and for communication and problem-solving with staff, reinforcing the organization's commitment to a data-driven, behavior-analytic approach to education and the use of positive reinforcement for optimal performance.
‖ Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in educational counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, or a closely related discipline.
- Fulfillment of all state and district requirements for appropriate school counselor licensing and/or credentials.
- Special education certification is preferred.
- A minimum of 2 years of prior experience working with individuals with emotional disorders and/or challenging behaviors in an educational context.
- Experience in alternative or special education program settings is highly preferred.
- Strong knowledge and experience in applied behavior analysis is preferred.
- Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations and make independent decisions.
- Advanced skills in oral and written communication, instruction, curriculum development, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem-solving, and decision-making.
- Familiarity with relevant technology, including instructional technology, Microsoft Office Suite, database management, and basic office equipment.
