Position Overview

Work Schedule:

Full-time, Evening Shift, from 3 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience required
  • Experience in security preferred
  • Valid Driver's License is mandatory
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is necessary
  • Skills in Active Listening, Communication, Critical Thinking, Judgment and Decision Making, Microsoft Office, Service Orientation, Speaking, and Writing are essential
  • Completion of de-escalation and physical intervention training within 180 days of hire is required. Certification as a Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) by the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) must be achieved within 90 days of hire. Previous military, law enforcement, or security experience is advantageous.

To enhance safety and security for our patients and staff, Sentara has instituted a Fit for Duty assessment to ensure that our officers meet a minimum fitness standard.

  • The assessment consists of four components: a response walk, a stair climb, a drag to safety, and a lift.
  • All candidates for the security officer position must successfully complete the FFD assessment, which will be conducted by the hiring/security leader and Employee Health prior to receiving a job offer.

The Safety and Security Specialist is responsible for maintaining a secure and safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff at Sentara facilities. This role involves actively patrolling the premises, monitoring activities around buildings and grounds, and responding effectively to both routine and emergency situations. Responsibilities include conducting surveillance, maintaining departmental logs and records, utilizing computer skills for documentation of daily activities, performing security investigations, assessing situations, and taking appropriate actions for timely and professional resolution.
