Job Summary

Bristol Hospital Inc. is seeking a skilled Histotechnologist to join our team. As a Histotechnologist, you will play a critical role in preparing histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by Pathologists.
  • Prepare sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut using cryostat machine, mount and stain tissue specimen received from surgery.
  • Perform automated IHC and manual special stains from tissue sections.
  • Embed and properly orient tissue samples.
  • Operate automated tissue processors, microtomes, stainers, coverslippers, Bond III immuno stainer and CBG benchtop recycler.
  • Perform daily, weekly and monthly QC on all equipment within the department.
  • Tissue samples, blocks and slides are accurately identified and labeled.
  • Routinely complete assigned work on time. Complete STAT requests within defined turnaround times. Critical issues are called to the appropriate healthcare provider.
  • Provide quality customer service in a timely and courteous manner.
  • Check inventory and rotate supplies; restock supplies as necessary.
  • Recognize limitations/resourcefulness of their competency within the realm of the job description.
  • Effectively interact with Laboratory personnel from all departments as well as departments throughout the organization to resolve routine issues.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of the LIS system to complete assigned tasks.
  • Maintain a safe work environment in the laboratory by meeting all regulatory standards and following Universal Precaution.
  • Present to the department prepared to work in a timely fashion according to scheduled hours.
  • Perform additional tasks/assignments/projects to benefit the organization.
  • Keep an orderly work area.
  • Once initially deemed competent via competency assessment, work will be performed independently with limited supervision and/or supervisory review.

Requirements:

  • AAS in Histotechnology or applied science and HT (ASCP) certification preferred, or BS in applied science and HT, HTL (ASCP) certification preferred, experience in a clinical laboratory preferred.
  • State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: ASCP Certification preferred.
  • Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital.
  • Physical Requirements: Walking, standing, sitting, bending required. Must work under the stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy. Position requires ability to constantly lift light objects less than 20 lbs., perform moderately difficult manipulative skills, arm-hand steadiness, and hand-eye coordination skills; walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods; see objects closely and hear normal sounds with some background noises.
  • Work Environment: Employee may frequently be exposed to blood, body tissues and/or fluids, chemical fumes and hazardous waste materials. Proper PPE is supplied by the employer.
  • Cognitive Requirements: Position requires ability to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes at a time. Individual must be able to understand and relate to the concept behind specific ideas and remember multiple tasks given to self and others over long periods of time, able to communicate verbally, using advanced level vocabulary.
