The Lead Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role in the administration of ionizing radiation for therapeutic purposes, ensuring compliance with the directives of the Radiation Oncologist. This position is accountable for the simulation of patients in preparation for radiation therapy, alongside providing essential patient care and education.

Responsibilities:

1. Supervise and guide the team within the department, implementing staffing adjustments based on service demands and patient volumes.
2. Serve as a resource for technical support and guidance.
3. Verify patient prescriptions, diagnoses, and identification, ensuring accuracy in all procedures.
4. Communicate effectively with patients, clarifying procedures and reinforcing instructions provided by the radiation oncologists and nursing staff.
5. Prepare treatment rooms and equipment in accordance with prescribed protocols, including the use of immobilization devices and field sizes.
6. Ensure the accuracy of treatment measurements and beam energy as documented in the treatment chart, noting any necessary adjustments.
7. Document treatment details meticulously, including cumulative doses, site-specific doses, treatment parameters, and billing information.
8. Conduct treatment simulations and manage all associated procedures, including cerrobend block fabrication.
9. Maintain cleanliness and order within the unit, ensuring adequate stock levels of necessary supplies.
10. Complete daily, progress, and discharge documentation in line with departmental standards, accurately recording productivity metrics.
11. Engage in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, identifying areas for enhancement in processes and patient satisfaction.
12. Document patient care plans and examination results as directed, escalating any non-routine issues to the appropriate management or healthcare providers.
13. Ensure compliance with safety checklists and quality control measures as required.

Qualifications:

- Graduation from an accredited radiation therapy program is required.
- ARRT and RT(T) certifications in radiation therapy, along with a current license in the state of practice, are required where applicable.
- Current BLS certification is mandatory.
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience is required.
- Leadership experience is preferred.
